Bank of Baroda Declares Reliance Communications and Anil Ambani’s Accounts Fraudulent

  • Bank of Baroda (BoB) has classified the loan accounts of Reliance Communications (RCom) and its former promoter Anil Ambani as fraudulent.
  • This makes BoB the third bank, after State Bank of India (SBI) and Bank of India (BoI), to take such action.
  • BoB had an outstanding loan of ₹1,656 crore against a sanctioned limit of ₹2,462 crore to RCom.
  • RCom’s loan account was first categorized as non-performing asset (NPA) in June 2017.
  • The decision followed a forensic audit by BDO India LLP, along with multiple show-cause notices (January 2024 & August 2025) and a personal hearing in July 2025.
  • Anil Ambani failed to provide sufficient rebuttal, leading to the fraud classification.

SBI Tops List of Customer Complaints in FY25 – BRSR Report

  • The FY25 Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR) revealed that State Bank of India (SBI) recorded the highest number of customer complaints among all banks.
  • SBI received 6.87 lakh complaints in FY25, of which 1.05 lakh remained unresolved by March-end.
  • A majority of the grievances were linked to unauthorized electronic debits.
  • Additionally, SBI reported 12,502 complaints about delays in essential service delivery in FY25, up from 7,223 in FY24.
  • Among private sector banks, Axis Bank saw the highest volume of complaints, largely concerning service delivery delays.
  • Axis Bank received 4.97 lakh complaints in FY25, with 8,782 cases unresolved at the end of the year.
  • Overall, FY25 witnessed a significant rise in customer dissatisfaction, led by SBI in the public sector and Axis Bank in the private sector.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

India Sends First Tranche of Humanitarian Aid to Fiji

  • India handed over five metric tonnes of cowpea seeds to Fiji as humanitarian assistance, delivered in Nadi city.
  • The initiative supports food security, farming sustainability, and livelihoods of local growers in Fiji.
  • The event took place during the first official visit of Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to India, where he met PM Narendra Modi.
  • Both nations reaffirmed cooperation in defence, health, trade, agriculture, climate action, and cultural exchanges.
  • As part of goodwill measures:
    • India gifted two ambulances to the Fijian Military Forces.
    • Announced the creation of a Defence Wing at India’s High Commission in Suva.
    • Declared plans for a Cyber Security Training Cell in Fiji.

Launch of MAR-a-THON 2025 – India’s Maritime Hackathon

  • The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), in collaboration with IIT Madras, NTCPWC, NMC, and Chennai Port Authority (ChPA), launched MAR-a-THON 2025 at IIT Madras.
  • This initiative is part of the Sagarmala Start-up Innovation Initiative (S2I2).
  • It aims to foster Research, Innovation, Start-ups, and Entrepreneurship (RISE) in the maritime sector.
  • The event also served as the curtain-raiser for India Maritime Week 2025.
  • Shri T.K. Ramachandran, IAS, Secretary, MoPSW, emphasized the role of technology in growth and described MAR-a-THON as a catalyst for solving industry challenges in line with Maritime AmritKaal 2047 goals.

Phase-II of PSA Mumbai Terminal Inaugurated

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Singapore PM Lawrence Wong virtually inaugurated Phase-II of the PSA Mumbai Terminal at Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPA).
  • With this expansion, the terminal’s handling capacity has increased to 4.8 million TEUs.
  • It has now become India’s largest container terminal.

NITI Aayog Report on Pulse Self-Sufficiency and Production Doubling

  • NITI Aayog released a report recommending measures to achieve:
    • Self-sufficiency in pulses by 2030.
    • Doubling production by 2047.
  • Production Projections:
    • 26.06 million tonnes (2022)34.45 million tonnes (2030)51.57 million tonnes (2047).
    • Crop-level estimates: 32.1 million tonnes (2030) and 50.7 million tonnes (2047).
  • Supply Projections (after accounting for seed, feed, wastage):
    • 30.6 million tonnes (2030) and 45.8 million tonnes (2047).
  • Surplus Estimates:
    • 3.79 million tonnes (2030).
    • 16.48 million tonnes (2047).
  • Key Recommendations:
    • Crop-wise clustering and customized technologies.
    • High-quality seed distribution and “one block, one seed village” model.
    • Focus on 111 high-potential districts.
    • Climate adaptation measures and data-driven monitoring.
  • The report stresses:
    • Awareness on the nutritional value of pulses.
    • Inclusion in daily diets as per ICMR–NIN guidelines.
    • Adopting a comprehensive supply-demand approach for achieving Atmanirbharta in pulses and ensuring sustainability.

APPOINTMENTS NEWS

Sundeep Sikka Elected AMFI Chairman

  • Sundeep Sikka, ED & CEO of Nippon Life India AMC, has been elected Chairman of the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI).
  • Vishal Kapoor, CEO of Bandhan AMC, has been appointed Vice Chairman.
  • Sikka previously served as AMFI Chairman (2013–2015) and has been a Board member since 2009.
  • Kapoor has been Chairman of the ARN Committee since 2020 and on the AMFI Board since 2018.
  • Established in 1995, AMFI operates under SEBI’s guidance to:
    • Protect investor interests.
    • Promote ethical practices.
    • Raise public awareness about mutual funds.

Amit Kshatriya Appointed NASA’s Associate Administrator

  • Indian-American Amit Kshatriya has been appointed as the Associate Administrator of NASA, the highest-ranking civil service role at the agency.
  • Announcement was made by Acting NASA Administrator Sean P. Duffy on September 3, 2025.
  • Kshatriya joined NASA in 2003 and has a 20-year career in space exploration.
  • He is a recipient of the Silver Snoopy Award, credited for his role as lead robotics officer during the COTS Dragon demonstration mission.
  • Most recently, he was Deputy Head of the Moon to Mars Programme at NASA’s Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate (ESDMD).
  • In his new role, he will:
    • Oversee NASA’s 10 center directors.
    • Act as the Chief Operating Officer.
    • Guide missions under the Artemis campaign, aimed at returning humans to the Moon and preparing for Mars exploration.

IMPORTANT DAYS

World Literacy Day – September 8

  • Observed annually on September 8 as International Literacy Day.
  • Established by UNESCO in 1966 to highlight literacy as a fundamental human right and a matter of dignity.
  • The idea originated at the 1965 World Conference of Ministers of Education on the Eradication of Illiteracy in Tehran, Iran.
  • UNESCO promotes this day in partnership with governments, NGOs, and local communities.
  • UNESCO’s motto: “Literacy is the best remedy”, emphasizing education for all.

World Physical Therapy Day – September 8

  • Celebrated globally on September 8 each year.
  • Recognized by the World Confederation for Physical Therapy in 1996.
  • Historical background:
    • The earliest reference comes from Hippocrates, who used massage as therapy.
    • In 1813, Per Henrik Ling, the Father of Swedish Gymnastics, founded the Royal Central Institute of Gymnastics (RCIG) to promote medical benefits of physical exercises.
    • In 1887, Sweden’s National Board of Health and Welfare officially recognized physical therapists.
  • In India, physiotherapy began in 1952 with the establishment of the first physiotherapy center in Mumbai, supported by the Government of India and WHO.

India Defeats Korea to Win Asia Cup 2025

  • India defeated South Korea 4-1 in the Asia Cup 2025 final held in Rajgir.
  • This marks India’s 4th Asia Cup title after victories in 2003, 2007, and 2017.
  • The win ended an eight-year title drought, strengthening India’s dominance in continental hockey.
  • South Korea finished as runner-up. They still hold the record for the most titles (five), followed closely by India (four).
  • With this win, India secured direct qualification for the 2026 FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup, to be co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands.

US Open 2025 – Final Results

  • The US Open 2025 was held from August 24 to September 7, 2025, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, New York.
  • It was the 145th edition of the tournament and the final Grand Slam of the year.
