Think & Discuss
Space-Based AI Infrastructure: The Future of Sustainable Computing?
Context from today’s quiz: Google Research unveiled Project Suncatcher, exploring AI datacentres in low-Earth orbit powered entirely by solar energy. This ambitious project aims to address AI’s growing energy footprint by utilising uninterrupted solar power in space through sun-synchronous orbits.
πŸ€” Your Perspective Matters
As AI systems become more powerful and energy-intensive, the environmental cost of training and running large language models has become a pressing concern. Project Suncatcher represents a radical approachβ€”moving computing infrastructure into space to access unlimited solar energy. This raises fundamental questions about the future of technology infrastructure, space governance, and sustainability.

Should the future of AI computing be in space, and what are the implications of tech giants building infrastructure beyond Earth’s jurisdiction?
  • Is moving energy-intensive computing to space a genuine sustainability solution, or does it merely shift environmental costs (launch emissions, space debris) rather than address them?
  • How should international space law evolve to govern commercial infrastructure in orbit? Should there be limits on how much space real estate tech companies can claim?
  • Could space-based computing create new forms of digital inequality, where access to the most powerful AI systems depends on a country’s space capabilities?
