AI Governance in the Global South: Can India Lead the Way?
Context from today’s quiz: India is hosting the AI Impact Summit 2026—the first global AI governance summit in the Global South—built on three foundational pillars: People, Planet, and Progress. Simultaneously, the amended IT Rules 2026 mandate labelling of AI-generated content and faster takedown timelines. These developments position India at the forefront of AI regulation discussions.
🤔 Your Perspective Matters
As AI technologies rapidly evolve, countries are grappling with how to balance innovation with regulation. India’s “People, Planet, Progress” framework offers a distinctive approach compared to the EU’s risk-based AI Act or the US’s sector-specific approach. But can developing nations truly shape global AI governance norms?

Is India’s human-centric AI governance approach better suited for the Global South than Western regulatory models?
  • How can India balance promoting AI innovation (startups, research) while implementing strict content labelling and takedown requirements?
  • Should developing nations collaborate on a “Global South AI Alliance” to have a unified voice in international AI governance forums?
  • Will mandatory AI content labelling be effective in combating misinformation, or will it create compliance burdens that stifle smaller platforms and creators?

We’d love to hear your thoughts! Share your perspective in the comments.
