E20 Petrol Mandate from April 2026

Economy

What: E20 petrol — a blend of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol with a Research Octane Number (RON) of 95 — becomes mandatory at all fuel outlets across India from April 1, 2026. This is a major milestone under the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme, which has been running since 2003.

How: The rollout is monitored by the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas. Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) are required to ensure E20-compliant supply chains. The ethanol is primarily sourced from sugarcane, maize, and damaged food grains, supporting farmers’ incomes.

Why: This topic is highly relevant for UPSC GS-III (Energy, Environment) and Banking/SSC GK. Key exam angles include India’s energy import reduction targets, the EBP Programme timeline, and the role of PPAC. E20 is expected to cut crude oil imports and reduce vehicular carbon emissions significantly.

J&K Wins Ranji Trophy 2025-26

Sports

What: Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) scripted cricketing history by winning the Ranji Trophy 2025-26, ending a 67-year wait in their very first appearance in the final. The Ranji Trophy is India’s premier domestic first-class cricket tournament, governed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

How: J&K, which was restructured as a Union Territory in 2019, has been steadily developing its cricket infrastructure. The team’s historic win reflects the success of BCCI’s grassroots development programs and the region’s sporting talent. The tournament features state associations competing over multiple rounds.

Why: Sports current affairs are regularly tested in SSC, Banking, and State PSC exams. This achievement is notable for its dual angle — sports and the governance/political significance of J&K as a Union Territory. Remember: Ranji Trophy = BCCI + domestic first-class cricket.

UIDAI–Google Partnership for Aadhaar Centre Mapping

Digital Governance

What: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has partnered with Google to map all authorised Aadhaar enrolment and update centres on Google Maps. Citizens can now search by service type and use Divyang (persons with disabilities)-friendly filters, along with operating hours.

How: The integration works through the Google Maps API, pulling verified UIDAI data to display only authorised centres. This directly combats the proliferation of unofficial and fraudulent Aadhaar service centres that have misled citizens. The Divyang-friendly filter ensures accessibility compliance under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.

Why: UIDAI and Aadhaar-related developments are perennial UPSC and Banking exam topics. This initiative connects to Digital India, e-governance, and inclusion themes. Also note UIDAI’s statutory status under the Aadhaar Act, 2016 — it functions under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

Sri Lanka’s Blue Bond Listed on NSE IX at GIFT City

Economy

What: Sri Lanka’s first Blue Bond — worth LKR 3 billion, issued by DFCC Bank — has been listed on NSE International Exchange (NSE IX) at GIFT City (Gujarat International Finance Tec-City) in Gandhinagar. Blue Bonds are a debt instrument specifically designed to finance ocean-friendly and marine conservation projects.

How: The bond was listed on NSE IX, India’s international financial exchange operating within the GIFT City International Financial Services Centre (IFSC). GIFT City operates under a special regulatory framework overseen by the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA). The proceeds will fund Sri Lankan ocean economy and marine conservation initiatives.

Why: This is significant for UPSC GS-II (India-Sri Lanka relations) and GS-III (financial instruments, sustainable finance). Key facts: GIFT City = India’s first IFSC; Blue Bonds = ocean sustainability finance; IFSCA = unified regulator for IFSCs. This also deepens bilateral financial cooperation between India and Sri Lanka.

India-Germany Climate Initiative: EUR 20 Million IKI Grant

Environment

What: Germany has announced a EUR 20 million Large Grant for India under the International Climate Initiative (IKI — Internationale Klimaschutzinitiative). The funding targets four ecologically critical zones: the Himalayas, Western Ghats, North-East India, and Gangetic floodplains, focusing on forest restoration and biodiversity corridors.

How: The IKI is Germany’s flagship climate finance instrument, channelled through the Federal Ministry for the Environment. In India, the grant integrates with the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) framework and specifically supports India’s NAP (National Adaptation Plan). Implementation will involve restoration of degraded ecosystems and connecting fragmented wildlife habitats.

Why: Relevant for UPSC GS-II (India-Germany bilateral) and GS-III (climate change, biodiversity). Key linkages: Western Ghats = UNESCO biodiversity hotspot; Himalayan ecosystem = India’s water tower; NAPCC = India’s core climate policy. IKI grant also aligns with India’s commitments under the Paris Agreement and the Global Biodiversity Framework (Kunming-Montreal).

Tamil Nadu’s First Dark Sky Park at Kolli Hills

Science & Research

What: Tamil Nadu inaugurated its first Dark Sky Park at Kolli Hills in Namakkal district, developed at a cost of ₹1 crore. The park features 3 telescopes and enforces minimal artificial light pollution within a 1.5 km radius. It is operational from January 15 to June 15 each year to coincide with optimal stargazing conditions.

How: Dark Sky Parks are designated areas where artificial light is strictly controlled to preserve natural night sky visibility. They are certified by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA). India’s first certified Dark Sky Park was established at Pench Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh in 2024. The Tamil Nadu park was developed to promote astro-tourism and science education.

Why: Dark Sky Parks connect to science & technology, environment, and tourism themes in competitive exams. For UPSC: link to light pollution as an environmental issue and astro-tourism under India’s tourism policy. Remember: India’s 1st Dark Sky Park = Pench Tiger Reserve, MP (2024); TN’s 1st = Kolli Hills, Namakkal (2026).
