Northeast India’s First Geothermal Production Well Drilled in Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh

CESHS (Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies; autonomous body under DST, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh) successfully drilled the Northeast Region’s first geothermal production well in Dirang village, West Kameng district, Arunachal Pradesh, supported by MoES. International collaborators: Norway Geotechnical Institute (NGI, Oslo), Gerotherpy hf (Iceland), and Guwahati Boring Service (Assam).

  • System uses a closed-loop binary Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) — vaporises organic fluid using geothermal heat to drive a turbine and generate electricity
  • Reservoir temperature at Dirang: ~115°C — suitable for direct-use geothermal technologies
  • Beyond power: supports agricultural drying (fruits, nuts, meat), space heating, and controlled-environment storage
  • Successful expansion could make Dirang India’s first geothermally powered town

Himachal Pradesh Declares Tsarap Chu as India’s Largest Conservation Reserve (1,585 sq. km)

The Government of Himachal Pradesh formally designated Tsarap Chu Conservation Reserve (CR) in Spiti Valley, HP as India’s largest conservation reserve under Section 36A(1) of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

  • Boundaries: UT Ladakh (north) | Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary (east) | Kabjima Nala (south) | Chandratal Wildlife Sanctuary (west)

ARIES and IRDE-DRDO Sign MoU to Strengthen India’s Space Situational Awareness (SSA)

Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital signed an MoU with Instruments Research & Development Establishment (IRDE), Dehradun (a DRDO lab) to jointly strengthen India’s ground-based Space Situational Awareness (SSA) capabilities.

  • ARIES will provide access to its 3.6-metre Devasthal Optical Telescope and Stratosphere-Troposphere (ST) Radar system

The Haryana Water Resources Authority (HWRA) launched the Haryana Water Resource Atlas 2025 — an AI-powered geospatial platform developed with Haryana Space Applications Centre (HARSAC), Hisar.

  • Integrates satellite data, GPS ground surveys, IMD forecasts, and CGWB datasets
  • Provides real-time data on groundwater levels, surface water bodies, aquifers, canal systems, and water-intensive crop patterns
  • Uses AI and GIS to forecast water stress and plan interventions: rainwater harvesting, alternative cropping, infrastructure upgrades

ISRO’s PSLV-C61 Mission Carrying EOS-09 Fails Due to Third-Stage Anomaly

On May 18, 2025, ISRO attempted its 101st mission by launching EOS-09 (RISAT-1B) aboard PSLV-C61 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. The mission failed due to a drop in chamber pressure in the third stage (PS3) solid rocket motor.

  • EOS-09: 1,696.24 kg | target orbit: Sun-Synchronous Polar Orbit (SSPO) at 529 km altitude
  • Purpose: 24/7 all-weather C-band SAR surveillance for agriculture, forestry, disaster management, and border security
📌 PSLV Failure History

Only the 3rd PSLV failure in 63 launches since 1993. Previous failures: PSLV-D1 (1993) and PSLV-C39 (2017). Also ISRO’s 2nd mission failure in 2025 — after NVS-02 failure in January 2025.

China Launches 12 AI-Powered Satellites to Build World’s First Orbital Supercomputer

China launched the first batch of 12 AI-powered satellites aboard a Long March 2D rocket from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre, forming the initial constellation of the ‘Three-Body Computing Constellation’ — designed to be the world’s first supercomputer in orbit.
