NITI Aayog Fiscal Health Index 2026
Odisha topped the Achiever category (score 73.1) for the second consecutive year in FHI 2026 (FY 2023-24). The index evaluates states on five pillars: Quality of Expenditure, Revenue Mobilisation, Fiscal Prudence, Debt Index, and Debt Sustainability. This edition first included 10 NE & Himalayan states separately, with Arunachal Pradesh leading that group.

UNSC Resolution 2817 β Iran & GCC
Adopted with 13 votes in favour, with China and Russia abstaining (no veto). Led by Bahrain and co-sponsored by 135 nations including India. The resolution condemned Iran’s attacks on GCC countries and Jordan, demanded a halt to Strait of Hormuz closure threats, and called for compliance with international humanitarian law.

Dandi March β Salt Satyagraha (1930)
Gandhi left Sabarmati Ashram on 12 March 1930 with 78 followers, covering 387 km over 24 days. He broke the Salt Law at Dandi, Navsari (Gujarat) on 6 April 1930 at 8:30 am, launching the Civil Disobedience Movement against the British Salt Act 1882. The march inspired global civil rights movements including Martin Luther King Jr.’s.

Ministry of Tribal Affairs β March 2026 Festivals
MoTA launched three tribal flagship festivals: Living Roots Festival (LRF) at Bikaner House & India Gate (13β15 March), Tribes Art Fest (TAF 2026) at Travancore Palace Art Gallery (2β13 March), and Bharat Tribes Fest (BTF 2026) at Sunder Nursery (18β30 March). These promote tribal heritage and livelihood opportunities for artisans.

India β Largest Cotton Supplier to USA (2025)
India surpassed China in 2025 to become the largest supplier of cotton products (apparel & home textiles) to the United States β a first-ever milestone. This reflects the China+1 diversification trend in global supply chains, India’s labour-cost competitiveness, and tariff pressures on Chinese goods. The government also released a Textile Waste Value Chain mapping report on 12 March 2026.

OBC Creamy Layer β Supreme Court Ruling 2026
The SC ruled that both occupational status and income must be considered β not income alone β to determine OBC creamy layer exclusion. The creamy layer concept was established through Indra Sawhney v. Union of India (1992), which upheld Mandal Commission recommendations. The current creamy layer threshold stands at Rs 8 lakh per annum.

C-DOT at MWC Barcelona 2026
C-DOT (Centre for Development of Telematics) operates under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications. Established in 1984 for indigenous telecom development, it was recognised at MWC 2026 (Barcelona, 2β5 March) for its Atmanirbhar AI-based telecom fraud detection solution. MWC is organised by GSMA and is the world’s largest telecom event.
Monetary Policy
RBI Open Market Operations β March 2026
RBI conducted two OMO tranches totalling Rs 1 lakh crore (Rs 50,000 crore on 9 March + Rs 50,000 crore on 13 March) by purchasing Government Securities to inject liquidity. This was timed ahead of financial year-end (31 March), when banks face cash outflows from GST payments and advance tax obligations. OMOs also help stabilise government bond yields.

New Delhi World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2026
The 2nd edition ran from 11β13 March 2026 at Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) Stadium, New Delhi with ~257 athletes from 8 nations. Devendra Jhajharia (double Paralympic gold medallist in javelin) is President of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI). India fielded ~219 athletes; gold medallists included Shailesh Kumar, Praveen Kumar, Preeti Pal, and Ankur Dhama.

Pi Day & International Day of Mathematics
UNESCO designated 14 March as the International Day of Mathematics in 2019. Pi (Ο β 3.14159β¦) is celebrated on 14 March (3/14) as it is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter β an irrational number. The US House of Representatives first recognised Pi Day in 2009. 14 March also marks the birth anniversary of Albert Einstein (1879).
