The Election Commission of India (ECI) on 15 March 2026 announced the schedule for Assembly Elections 2026 in four states and one Union Territory — West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala (Keralam), Assam, and Puducherry — at a press conference by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) came into immediate effect across all poll-bound states/UT upon announcement.
| State/UT | Seats | Phase(s) & Date(s) | Counting | Term Expiry |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Assam | 126 | Single — 9 Apr 2026 | 4 May 2026 | 20 May |
| Kerala (Keralam) | 140 | Single — 9 Apr 2026 | 4 May 2026 | 23 May |
| Puducherry | 30 | Single — 9 Apr 2026 | 4 May 2026 | 15 Jun |
| Tamil Nadu | 234 | Single — 23 Apr 2026 | 4 May 2026 | 10 May |
| West Bengal | 294 | Two phases — 23 Apr (152) + 29 Apr (142) | 4 May 2026 | 7 May |
- Total Electorate: ~17.4 crore eligible voters across 2.19 lakh polling stations; ~25 lakh election officials deployed.
- MCC Effect: No new government schemes, welfare announcements, or financial grants can be made in poll-bound states by incumbents.
The Model Code of Conduct has no statutory backing — it is a set of guidelines evolved through consensus. It comes into force from the date of election announcement and remains operative till the completion of elections. The Election Commission of India is established under Article 324 of the Constitution. The CEC can only be removed through a process similar to removal of a Supreme Court judge (impeachment by Parliament).

The IRNSS-1F satellite — part of India’s NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) regional navigation system — experienced an atomic clock failure in March 2026. The satellite, launched in March 2016, had completed its designed mission life of 10 years. It can now only provide limited services such as one-way broadcast messaging and cannot support accurate positioning.
- NavIC: India’s Regional Satellite Navigation System, developed by ISRO; provides positioning and timing services within India and up to 1,500 km beyond its borders.
- Constellation: Since 2013, nine IRNSS satellites have been launched; eight reached intended orbit. Several have experienced atomic clock failures.
- Atomic Clock: A highly precise timekeeping device using natural oscillations of atoms (cesium or rubidium); critical for satellite navigation accuracy.
- ISRO’s Response: Plans to launch three new replacement NavIC satellites by end of 2026. Future missions will use indigenously developed rubidium atomic clocks (replacing imported ones).
- Ministry: Department of Space; ISRO.
NavIC (formerly IRNSS) is India’s own regional navigation system, analogous to the US GPS, Russia’s GLONASS, Europe’s Galileo, and China’s BeiDou. NavIC uses a constellation of 7 operational satellites in geostationary and geosynchronous orbits. It is managed by ISRO under the Department of Space. The initiative to develop indigenous rubidium atomic clocks is significant for reducing import dependency (Atmanirbhar Bharat in space tech).

The United States and South Korea began their large annual joint military exercise ‘Freedom Shield 2026’, involving thousands of troops. The exercise focuses on combined defence training and readiness for the Korean Peninsula.
- Purpose: Combined defence training; readiness for Korean Peninsula contingencies.
- History: Freedom Shield replaced the Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) as the primary US-ROK combined exercise.
- Significance: Reflects the ongoing US-South Korea mutual defence treaty obligations under the US-ROK Mutual Defense Treaty (1953).
The Korean War (1950–53) ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty — technically, North and South Korea remain at war. The US-ROK alliance is anchored by the Mutual Defense Treaty of 1953, under which the US maintains approximately 28,500 troops in South Korea. Joint exercises are a recurring flashpoint with North Korea (DPRK), which views them as rehearsals for invasion.
