Assembly Elections 2026 β Schedule
The Election Commission of India (ECI), led by CEC Gyanesh Kumar, announced elections for five regions: Assam, Kerala (Keralam), Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal. Voting is on 9 April (Assam, Kerala, Puducherry), 23 April (Tamil Nadu + Phase 1 WB), and 29 April (Phase 2 WB). Counting on 4 May 2026. Total electorate: ~17.4 crore voters across ~2.19 lakh polling stations.

BCCI NAMAN Awards 2026
Shubman Gill won the Polly Umrigar Award (Best International Cricketer β Men) for the 2nd time, scoring 1,764 international runs in 2025. Smriti Mandhana won the women’s award for a record 5th time. The BCCI’s highest honour β Col. C.K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award β went to Roger Binny and Rahul Dravid. Mithali Raj received the Women’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

NavIC β India’s Regional Navigation System
NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) is India’s regional satellite navigation system developed by ISRO under the Department of Space. It covers India and up to 1,500 km beyond its borders. Since 2013, nine IRNSS satellites were launched; IRNSS-1F (launched March 2016) failed after completing its 10-year design life. ISRO plans three replacement NavIC satellites with indigenously developed rubidium atomic clocks by end-2026.

AAHAR 2026 β 40th Edition
The 40th AAHAR International Food & Hospitality Fair (10β14 March 2026) was held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, organised by MoFPI and ITPO. Italy became Partner Country for the first time in AAHAR’s history, reflecting India-EU cooperation in food processing. AAHAR is one of South Asia’s leading B2B platforms for the food and hospitality sector.

Mayank Chakraborty β India’s 94th GM
Mayank Chakraborty (16, Assam) became India’s 94th Chess Grandmaster and the first-ever GM from Assam and North-East India. He secured his final GM norm at the 8th GM Tournament in Sweden. India’s first GM was Viswanathan Anand (1988). Recent Indian chess stars include Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi. India has rapidly emerged as a global chess powerhouse.

NMDC β 50 MT Iron Ore Milestone
NMDC Limited (est. 1958) is India’s largest iron ore producer β a Navratna CPSE under the Ministry of Steel. It became the first Indian mining company to produce 50 million tonnes of iron ore in a single financial year (FY 2025β26). Major mining operations are in Chhattisgarh and Karnataka. Navratna status gives CPSE boards greater financial and operational autonomy.

World Consumer Rights Day β 15 March
Observed on 15 March annually by Consumers International, the day was first observed in 1983. It was inspired by US President JFK’s speech to Congress (15 March 1962) recognising four consumer rights: safety, information, choice, and to be heard. Theme for 2026: ‘Safe Products, Confident Consumers’. In India, the Consumer Protection Act 2019 governs consumer rights; National Consumer Rights Day is on 24 December.

All England Open 2026 β Lin Chun-Yi’s Historic Win
Lin Chun-Yi (Chinese Taipei/Taiwan) became the first men’s singles player from Chinese Taipei to win the All England title (8 March 2026, Utilita Arena, Birmingham). India’s Lakshya Sen was runner-up β his 2nd All England final. India’s only All England men’s singles winners: Prakash Padukone (1980) and Pullela Gopichand (2001). The All England is a BWF Super 1000 event.

FIFA World Cup 2026 β Key Facts
FIFA World Cup 2026 is jointly hosted by USA, Canada, and Mexico β the first World Cup hosted by three nations. It will feature 48 teams for the first time. Final on 19 July 2026 at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey. Iran withdrew due to the Iran-US-Israel conflict (began 28 February 2026). FIFA is headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland.

RBI β Digital Payments Awareness Week 2026
The RBI ran Digital Payments Awareness Week from 9β13 March 2026. Its pilot β ‘Awareness Program on Digital Payments’ β was conducted in Maharashtra in partnership with CSC e-Governance Services India Ltd via Village Level Entrepreneurs (VLEs), targeting 10 lakh participants in rural and semi-urban areas. The initiative aims to promote safe and widespread digital payment adoption across India.
