AIKEYME β Inaugural Africa-India Maritime Exercise
AIKEYME (Africa India Key Maritime Engagement; meaning ‘Unity’ in Sanskrit) is the first multilateral maritime exercise under PM Modi’s MAHASAGAR framework, co-hosted by India and Tanzania from April 13, 2025. Eight African nations participated: Comoros, Djibouti, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, and South Africa.

DRDO’s ‘Gaurav’ β Long-Range Glide Bomb
Gaurav is a 1,000 kg-class Long-Range Glide Bomb (LRGB) with a range of 30β150 km and a wingspan of 3.4 m. It was successfully tested from a Su-30 MKI, hitting a target at ~100 km. Developed by RCI (Hyderabad), ARDE (Pune), and ITR (Chandipur). Guidance: GPS, inertial navigation, and laser/infrared.

IOS SAGAR β INS Sunayna Redesignated
INS Sunayna was redesignated Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR and sailed from Karwar naval base on April 5, 2025, for AIKEYME. The other Indian assets deployed to Dar-es-Salaam were INS Chennai (destroyer) and INS Kesari (large landing ship).

Siachen Day β Operation Meghdoot (1984)
Siachen Day (April 13) commemorates Operation Meghdoot, launched on April 13, 1984, when Indian troops secured Bilafond La Pass on the Siachen Glacier (~20,000 ft, Karakoram range). It is the world’s longest active military operation. 2025 marks the 41st year of unbroken Indian Army presence.

Jallianwala Bagh Massacre β April 13, 1919
Protesters gathered at Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar on April 13, 1919 to oppose the Rowlatt Act (Anarchical and Revolutionary Crimes Act, 1919) and celebrate Baisakhi. Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer ordered troops to fire. The Hunter Commission (1919), chaired by Lord William Hunter, investigated the massacre.

Jallianwala Bagh Memorial β 1961
The Jallianwala Bagh memorial, designed by American architect Benjamin Polk, was inaugurated on April 13, 1961 by President Dr. Rajendra Prasad in the presence of PM Jawaharlal Nehru β exactly 42 years after the massacre.

International Day of Human Space Flight β April 12
The UN General Assembly declared April 12 as International Day of Human Space Flight via resolution A/RES/65/271 (April 7, 2011). It commemorates Yuri Gagarin’s first human spaceflight on April 12, 1961. UNOOSA (Vienna) oversees peaceful international space cooperation.

History
Rowlatt Act, 1919 β Colonial Context
The Rowlatt Act (formally the Anarchical and Revolutionary Crimes Act, 1919) empowered British authorities to arrest and detain Indians without trial for up to two years. It was a direct trigger for mass protests, including the Jallianwala Bagh assembly, and galvanised the Indian independence movement under Gandhi.
