DRDO Mk-II(A) Laser DEW β India’s 4th-Country Status
DRDO tested the vehicle-mounted Mk-II(A) Laser Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) at NOAR, Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh in April 2025. The 30 kW system was tested at 3.5 km range in extreme heat. India is now the 4th country with this capability (after USA, Russia, China). Developed by CHESS, Hyderabad with LRDE, IRDE, and DLRL.

Blue Origin NS-31 β First All-Female Spaceflight in 60+ Years
Blue Origin NS-31 was the first all-female spaceflight since Valentina Tereshkova’s solo journey in 1963. The 11-minute flight carried Katy Perry and five other women over 100 km above Earth. It was Blue Origin’s 11th human spaceflight. Blue Origin was founded in 2000; CEO: Dave Limp.

Mario Vargas Llosa β Nobel Laureate (1936β2025)
Mario Vargas Llosa (b. March 28, 1936, Arequipa, Peru) received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2010. He passed away on April 13, 2025 at 89. A leading figure of the Latin American literary Boom alongside GarcΓa MΓ‘rquez and Carlos Fuentes, he was cited for mapping structures of power and the individual’s resistance.

Kompact AI β CPU-Based AI Platform
Kompact AI, launched by IIT-Madras, Ziroh Labs, and IIT-M Pravartak Foundation, enables AI model inference on standard CPUs without GPUs, supporting India’s ‘AI for All’ mission. It optimised 17 AI models including DeepSeek, Qwen, and Llama; works offline β suitable for remote and low-resource settings.

Gabon β Oligui Nguema Elected President
Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema ended the Bongo family’s 56-year rule via a military coup in August 2023 (ousting Ali Bongo Ondimba). IFC’s MSME Finance Gap β USD 5.7 Trillion
The IFC (International Finance Corporation) identified a global MSME finance gap of USD 5.7 trillion (USD 8 trillion including informal enterprises). MSMEs constitute 90%+ of businesses, contribute 50% of global GDP, and support 70% of global employment. The IFC’s Catalytic First Loss Guarantee Facility targets women-owned, agri, and climate-focused MSMEs.

India’s Silk Industry β Production & Trade Data
India’s raw silk production rose from 31,906 MT (2017β18) to 38,913 MT (2023β24). Silk exports grew ~16.46% from Rs 1,649.48 crore to Rs 2,027.56 crore over the same period. India is the world’s 2nd-largest silk producer and the largest consumer of silk globally.

CPCB’s New ‘Blue Category’ β EES Industries
The CPCB (Chairman: Amandeep Garg) introduced a new ‘Blue Category’ for Essential Environmental Services (EES) industries, primarily Waste-to-Energy (WTE) incineration plants handling unsegregated Municipal Solid Waste. Previously Red Category, these industries now get an additional 2-year Consent to Operate (CTO) validity, based on the precautionary principle.

Daniel Noboa won re-election as Ecuador’s President with 55.8% of votes, defeating Luisa GonzΓ‘lez (Citizen Revolution Movement, 44%). World Quantum Day (April 14) marks its 4th observance in 2025, coinciding with the UN-designated International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQST).
