Himalayan Snow at a 23-Year Low: What Does the HKH Crisis Mean for India’s Water and Food Security?
Context from today’s quiz: ICIMOD’s HKH Snow Update Report 2025 revealed that snow persistence in the Hindu Kush Himalaya region was 23.6% below normal β€” the lowest in 23 years and the third consecutive below-normal year. This was recorded across the Ganga, Indus, and Brahmaputra river basins, which together sustain the agricultural and drinking water needs of hundreds of millions of people across South Asia.
πŸ€” Your Perspective Matters
The Hindu Kush Himalayan region is often called the “Third Pole” β€” the world’s largest freshwater reservoir outside the polar ice caps. Reduced snowpack means less water flowing into rivers during the critical summer months, threatening irrigation for winter-sown crops, hydropower generation, and drinking water supplies across India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and China. Three consecutive below-normal snow years represent a trend, not just an anomaly.

What does the Himalayan snow crisis mean for India’s water security, and how urgently does India need to rethink its water management and agricultural strategies in response?
  • India’s Green Revolution was built on water-intensive crops like wheat and rice, sustained largely by Himalayan river systems. As snowpack declines, should India begin a major shift toward drought-resistant crops and less water-intensive farming practices β€” and what would be the political and social costs of doing so?
  • The Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra river systems are shared by multiple countries. How should India engage with Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and China to develop cooperative water management frameworks for a future with less glacial and snowmelt water β€” especially given existing geopolitical tensions over transboundary rivers?
  • India has thousands of water storage structures, dams, and groundwater systems β€” but they are managed in silos, with poor data integration and limited forecasting capacity. What systemic reforms in water governance and early warning infrastructure does India need to adapt to declining Himalayan water availability?
