Eid-ul-Fitr 2026 β Moon Sighting & Islamic Calendar
Eid-ul-Fitr marks 1st of Shawwal, 1447 AH (10th month of Islamic Hijri calendar), celebrated after 30 days of Ramadan fasting. In India, the Shawwal crescent was not sighted on 19 March, making 20 March the 30th fast and Eid on 21 March. Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Qatar celebrated a day earlier on 20 March. Ramadan 2026 in India began 18 February.

NIRYAT Portal β India’s Trade Data Platform
NIRYAT (National-Import-Export Record for Yearly Analysis of Trade) launched by PM Modi in 2022 under DPIIT for real-time foreign trade data. In FY2024-25, Tamil Nadu topped textile exports at USD 7,997.17 million (21.84%); followed by Gujarat (USD 5,646 mn) and Maharashtra (USD 3,831 mn). India’s total textile exports: USD 36,610 million.

CEA 20th Electric Power Survey β 2035-36 Projections
The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) projects India’s installed capacity to reach 1,121 GW by 2035-36 (from ~520 GW in Jan 2026). Peak demand to touch 459 GW (CAGR: 5.58%); electricity requirement to reach 3,365 BU (CAGR: 6.41%). Released at the Bharat Electricity Summit 2026, held 19β22 March at Yashobhoomi, Dwarka, New Delhi.

Observed on 21 March β date represents trisomy 21 (3 copies of the 21st chromosome). Recognised by the UN in 2012 (Resolution A/RES/66/149). Established by Down Syndrome International (DSI). 2026 theme: ‘Break Barriers, Open Doors’ β inclusive education, employment, and social participation. Down Syndrome causes intellectual disability and distinctive physical features.

World Poetry Day β UNESCO Proclamation 1999
World Poetry Day proclaimed by UNESCO at its 30th General Conference in Paris, 1999. Promotes linguistic diversity, oral traditions, and poetic expression across cultures. UNESCO (HQ: Paris) is the UN agency for education, science, culture, and communication. 2026 focus: multilingual and digital poetry and youth engagement with contemporary forms.

International Day of Forests β 21 March
Established by UNGA in 2012 (Resolution A/RES/67/200). 2026 theme: ‘Forests and Sustainable Production and Consumption.’ India’s forest and tree cover: 25.17% of geographical area (827,357 sq km) per India State of Forest Report 2023 (FSI/MoEFCC). India’s NDC: additional carbon sink of 2.5β3 billion tonnes COβ equivalent by 2030 through forests.

World Happiness Report 2026 β Finland’s 9th Top Rank
Published by UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) annually since 2012. Finland topped for the 9th consecutive year β high social trust, safety, and low inequality. Costa Rica climbed to 4th place β highest-ever for any Latin American nation. Report highlighted social media’s impact on youth well-being. India ranked approximately 118th.

Ministry of Ayush β In-Flight Yoga & Establishment
AYUSH: Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy. Ministry established in 2014 (earlier a Department under MoHFW). Launched a 5-minute in-flight yoga routine addressing DVT risk and flight fatigue. International Yoga Day: 21 June annually (since 2015), UN Resolution A/RES/69/131 adopted in 2014. Launched during Yoga Mahotsav 2026.

Chapchar Kut β Mizoram’s Spring Festival
Chapchar Kut is Mizoram’s premier spring festival, celebrated on the 2nd Friday of March. Marks completion of the Jhum (shifting) cultivation jungle-clearing phase. ‘Kut’ means festival in Mizo. Three major Mizo festivals: Chapchar Kut (spring), Mim Kut (August β maize harvest), Pawl Kut (December β year-end harvest). Highlight: Cheraw (bamboo dance).
