World Water Day 2026
Observed every 22 March, established by UNGA Resolution A/RES/47/193 (22 December 1992); first observed 22 March 1993. The 2026 theme is ‘Water and Gender: Where Water Flows, Equality Grows’, focusing on inclusive water governance. UN-Water coordinates the day and publishes the annual UN World Water Development Report (WWDR).

Global Water Crisis
Over 2 billion people lack safely managed drinking water globally. 447 million children study at schools without reliable clean water. Diarrhoea kills a child under five every 2 minutes. The global water crisis is both a supply and equity challenge, disproportionately affecting women and girls.
Digital Governance
Jal Mahotsav 2026 & Jal Jeevan Mission
Launched by C.R. Patil (Union Jal Shakti Minister) at Navsari, Gujarat on 8 March 2026 (Women’s Day). Jal Arpan Diwas = formal handover of water infrastructure to Gram Panchayats under Jal Jeevan Mission. Campaign ran 8–22 March; tagline: ‘गाँव का उत्सव, देश का महोत्सव’. Women SHGs involved in water testing and maintenance.
Taxation
Income-tax Act, 2025 & New Rules
CBDT notified Income-tax Rules, 2026 under Section 533 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (replaces the 1961 Act). Effective 1 April 2026. Key change: ‘Financial Year’ and ‘Assessment Year’ unified into ‘Tax Year’. Education Allowance raised from ₹100 to ₹3,000/month/child; Hostel Allowance from ₹300 to ₹9,000/month/child.

World Indoor Athletics Championships 2028
India awarded hosting rights for the 22nd edition of the World Indoor Athletics Championships (2028) at Bhubaneswar’s Kalinga Stadium. Decision taken by World Athletics Council at Toruń, Poland. India becomes only the 4th Asian nation to host, after Japan (1999), Qatar (2010), and China (2025). Championships began in 1985 in Paris.

US Fed Rate Hold – March 2026
FOMC (March 18–19, 2026) held federal funds rate at 3.50%–3.75% — 2nd consecutive hold. Primary driver: Iran conflict driving Brent crude to ~USD 115/barrel, raising inflation risk. PCE forecast raised to 2.7% for 2026; GDP growth upgraded to 2.4%. Fed projects one rate cut in 2026. Compare: India’s RBI repo rate = 5.25%.

Bihar Diwas – 22 March
Bihar carved out of Bengal Presidency on 22 March 1912 by British administration. In 2026, Bihar marks its 114th Foundation Day. Historically significant as home to the Magadha Empire, Nalanda University, and birthplace of Buddhism (Bodh Gaya), Jainism (Vaishali), and Sikhism (Patna — birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh).

World Meteorological Organization (WMO)
World Meteorological Day = 23 March, commemorating entry into force of the WMO Convention (23 March 1950). WMO is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. 2026 theme: ‘Closing the Early Warning Gap’. India’s IMD (est. 1875), under Ministry of Earth Sciences, has achieved 100% coastal cyclone warning coverage.

Himalayan Glaciers — Water Tower of Asia
Himalayas hold the world’s 3rd largest freshwater ice store (after Arctic and Antarctic). ~680 million people depend on Himalayan meltwater. Major rivers fed: Ganga, Yamuna, Brahmaputra, Indus, Mekong, Yangtze. UN designated 21 March as World Day for Glaciers; 2025 = International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation (IYGP). Cryosphere stores ~70% of Earth’s freshwater.

Stockholm Water Prize
Established in 1991 by the Stockholm Water Foundation with the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Awarded annually for outstanding contribution to sustainable water use and protection. Prize: 1 million SEK + crystal sculpture. Presented by H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden during World Water Week (August) in Stockholm, organised by SIWI.
