Mahavir Jayanti 2026 — 24th Tirthankara
Lord Mahavira’s Five Great Vows (Panca Mahavrata) are Ahimsa, Satya, Asteya, Brahmacharya, and Aparigraha. He attained Moksha at Pawapuri, Nalanda, Bihar (~527 BCE) and was born in Kundagrama, Vaishali. 2026 marks his 2624th birth anniversary; NSE and BSE remain closed.
Technology & Transport
India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Train
Manufactured by ICF Chennai, the train runs on the Jind–Sonipat route (~89 km, Northern Railway, Haryana). Total output: 2,400 kW (two 1,200 kW Driving Power Cars, 10 coaches). Only byproduct: water vapour (zero CO₂). India is now the 5th country with hydrogen rail technology after Germany, Sweden, Japan, and China.
Monetary Policy
RBI Penalties — March 2026
RBI imposed penalties under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 (Section 47A): UBI — Rs 95.40 lakh (highest), Central Bank of India — Rs 63.60 lakh, Bank of India — Rs 58.50 lakh, Pine Labs (fintech) — Rs 3.10 lakh (lowest). Penalties are for regulatory compliance deficiencies and do not affect customer transactions.
Defence
MoD Defence Contracts — Rs 858 Crore
Two contracts signed: Tunguska Air Defence Missile Systems from JSC Rosoboronexport (Russia) for Rs 445 crore (Indian Army); Depot-Level Inspection of P-8I maritime patrol aircraft from Boeing India Defense (USA) for Rs 413 crore (Indian Navy, 12 P-8I aircraft). DAC also approved AoN for proposals worth ~Rs 2.38 lakh crore.
Sports
Hockey India 8th Annual Awards 2025
Zafar Iqbal received the Major Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award (Rs 25 lakh). Hardik Singh won Men’s Player of Year (Rs 20 lakh; two Olympic bronzes — Tokyo 2020 & Paris 2024). Gurjant Singh retired from international hockey at the same event (130+ caps, 33 goals, Arjuna Award 2021, two Olympic bronze medals).
Environment & Geopolitics
Strait of Hormuz Crisis — UN Task Force
The UN Task Force to safeguard Strait of Hormuz trade is led by Jorge Moreira da Silva, Executive Director of UNOPS. It includes UNCTAD, IMO, and ICC. The Strait — between Iran and Oman — handles ~20% of global petroleum and ~30% of LNG daily. Iran’s partial blockade triggered India’s Operation Urja Suraksha and excise duty cuts on fuel.
Polity & Governance
NCBC — Constitutional Body (Article 338B)
The National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) was originally a statutory body under the NCBC Act, 1993. The 102nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 2018 inserted Article 338B, granting it constitutional status. Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti was appointed Chairperson in March 2026. Overseen by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MSJE).
Digital & Startup
DPIIT–KRAFTON MoU — Gaming & Esports
KRAFTON Inc. is a South Korean gaming company known for BGMI (Battlegrounds Mobile India), India’s PUBG Mobile relaunch. The DPIIT–KRAFTON MoU supports startups in gaming, Esports, interactive media, and AI. DPIIT also signed an MoU with Repos Energy India (fuel-tech). India is the world’s 3rd-largest startup ecosystem by number of recognised startups.
Environment
National Green Hydrogen Mission & Indian Railways
India’s hydrogen train is aligned with the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Hydrogen is produced via a 1 MW electrolysis plant at Jind (storage: 3,000 kg). Indian Railways aims for Net Zero carbon emissions by 2030. Green Hydrogen (via renewable-powered electrolysis) is the cleanest form of hydrogen production.
History & Heritage
Major Dhyan Chand — Wizard of Hockey
Major Dhyan Chand (1905–1979) won 3 Olympic gold medals (1928 Amsterdam, 1932 Los Angeles, 1936 Berlin). His birthday, 29 August, is celebrated as National Sports Day in India. The highest lifetime achievement award in Indian hockey — the Major Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award — is named in his honour.

Think & Discuss
Green Hydrogen Railways: India’s Path to Net Zero by 2030 — Ambition or Achievable Milestone?
Context from today’s quiz: India’s first hydrogen-powered train completed oscillation trials in March 2026, set to run commercially on the Jind–Sonipat route (Haryana). Manufactured by ICF Chennai, it runs on fuel cells producing only water vapour, supporting the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Indian Railways has pledged Net Zero carbon emissions by 2030.
🤔 Your Perspective Matters
India’s hydrogen train is a technological landmark, but scaling it across Indian Railways — with 67,000+ km of network and nearly 8,000 locomotives — requires massive green hydrogen infrastructure, enormous capital investment, and renewable energy capacity far beyond current levels.

Can India realistically achieve Net Zero railways by 2030, or should the target be revisited for a more achievable 2040 horizon?
  • Should India prioritise electrification of diesel routes over hydrogen trains, given lower costs and faster deployment timelines?
  • The Jind electrolysis plant produces hydrogen from grid electricity — how critical is it that this electricity comes from renewables to make hydrogen truly “green”?
  • Germany, Japan, and China lead in hydrogen rail — what strategic lessons should India’s policymakers borrow, and what unique challenges does India’s vast rail network pose?
