India’s Nuclear Triad: Strategic Necessity or Regional Escalation Risk?
Context from today’s quiz: The commissioning of INS Aridhaman on 3 April 2026 completes India’s nuclear triad — the ability to launch nuclear weapons from land, air, and sea. With 8 vertical launch tubes capable of deploying K-4 SLBMs with a 3,500 km range, India’s second-strike capability has grown significantly. China has expressed concern, while Pakistan continues to expand its tactical nuclear arsenal.
🤔 Your Perspective Matters
Does strengthening India’s submarine-based nuclear deterrence contribute to long-term regional stability in South Asia and the Indo-Pacific, or does it risk triggering a new arms race that could undermine the very security it seeks to ensure?

Should India’s SSBN expansion be seen as defensive deterrence or offensive escalation by its neighbours?
  • How does credible second-strike capability (sea-based deterrence) differ strategically from land-based or air-based nuclear forces — and why does it matter for India’s ‘No First Use’ doctrine?
  • Given that China’s nuclear arsenal is estimated at 500+ warheads and Pakistan continues developing tactical nuclear weapons, is India’s SSBN programme proportionate or accelerating?
  • What obligations does India carry as a responsible nuclear power that is not a signatory to the NPT, and how should the international community respond to its expanding maritime nuclear capability?

We’d love to hear your thoughts! Share your perspective in the comments.
