National Quantum Mission: India’s 1,000 km QKD Network

Science & Research

What: India’s National Quantum Mission (NQM) demonstrated a 1,000 km secure quantum communication network — one of the world’s longest — announced by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) on 8 April 2026. The network uses the ARMOS Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) platform developed by QNu Labs, an Indian startup supported under NQM, and was validated by VIAVI Solutions.

How: QKD (Quantum Key Distribution) enables theoretically unbreakable encryption: any eavesdropping attempt changes the quantum state of photons and is immediately detected. NQM became operational in October 2024; within less than two years it achieved the 1,000 km inter-city milestone (March 2026). The mission carries a budget of Rs 6,003.65 crore for 2023–2031, and startups under NQM grew from 8 to 17 during this period. The target is a 2,000 km pan-India backbone by 2030–31, comparable to China’s 2,000 km satellite+ground QKD network demonstrated in 2021.

Why: This is a high-yield Science & Tech topic for UPSC Prelims GS-I/III, UPSC Mains GS-III (Internal Security, Technology), and Banking/SSC GK sections. Key MCQ anchors: budget figure (Rs 6,003.65 crore), platform name (ARMOS QKD), developer (QNu Labs), and target year (2030–31). The overlap with national security and critical infrastructure protection also makes it relevant for UPSC Mains Essay and CDS/NDA.

Census 2027: Three Historic Firsts

Digital Governance

What: India’s 16th Census (8th post-Independence) will be conducted in 2027 with three unprecedented features: (1) First fully digital census using a dedicated mobile app; (2) First self-enumeration option accessible at se.census.gov.in in 16 languages; (3) First caste enumeration since 1931. The total budget is Rs 11,718.24 crore, and approximately 30 lakh field functionaries will be deployed. The Registrar General is Mritunjay Kumar Narayan.

How: Phase I — House Listing and Housing (HLO) — runs April–September 2026 with a 30-day enumeration window plus a 15-day self-enumeration window per state. Phase II reference date is 1 March 2027 (snow-bound areas: 1 October 2026). Prime Minister Modi, President Murmu, Vice-President Radhakrishnan, and Home Minister Amit Shah completed self-enumeration on 1 April 2026 (launch day). Mascots are ‘Pragati’ (female enumerator) and ‘Vikas’ (male enumerator).

Why: Census is a perennial UPSC Prelims and Mains GS-I (Indian Society) topic. The three firsts — digital, self-enumeration, caste — are each an independent MCQ hook. The caste enumeration angle connects to OBC policy debates under GS-II (Social Justice). Banking and SSC exams frequently test census-related statistics and administrative details.

PM MUDRA Yojana: 11th Anniversary Stats

Economy

What: Pradhan Mantri MUDRA (Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency) Yojana (PMMY) completed 11 years on 8 April 2026, having been launched by PM Modi on 8 April 2015. As of its anniversary: 57.79 crore total loan accounts sanctioned, Rs 40.07 lakh crore total disbursed, and 12 crore+ new entrepreneurs created (21% of total accounts). Women hold 59.81% of accounts; SC+ST+OBC borrowers account for 45.52%. The maximum loan ceiling is Rs 20 lakh (raised from Rs 10 lakh in Union Budget 2024–25).

How: MUDRA is a wholly-owned subsidiary of SIDBI (Small Industries Development Bank of India) and functions as a refinancing body — it does not lend directly. Loans are disbursed via commercial banks, Regional Rural Banks (RRBs), Small Finance Banks (SFBs), Microfinance Institutions (MFIs), and Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs). Credit guarantee is provided by NCGTC (National Credit Guarantee Trustee Company). Loan categories: Shishu (up to Rs 50,000), Kishore (Rs 50,000–Rs 5 lakh), Tarun (Rs 5–10 lakh), Tarun Plus (Rs 10–20 lakh, added in Budget 2024–25). Borrowers get a MUDRA Card — a RuPay debit card for working capital.

Why: PMMY is among the most frequently tested economy schemes across UPSC Prelims, IBPS PO, RBI Grade B, SBI PO, and SSC CGL. Key MCQ anchors: launch date (8 April 2015), MUDRA’s parent (SIDBI), four loan categories, women’s share (59.81%), and the slogan ‘Funding the Unfunded’. The Tarun Plus category and the raised Rs 20 lakh ceiling are recent additions likely to appear in 2026 exams.

🧠 Mini-Quiz: Test Your Recall

3 questions from today’s one-liners. No peeking!

1

India’s National Quantum Mission (NQM) demonstrated a secure quantum communication network in April 2026. Which platform was used, and which Indian startup developed it?

Correct Answer: B — The NQM’s 1,000 km quantum network uses the ARMOS QKD (Quantum Key Distribution) platform developed by QNu Labs, an Indian startup supported under NQM. Option D is a swap trap — ARMOS is correct but DRDO is wrong; the developer is QNu Labs, not DRDO. Options A and C name fictitious platforms. The network was validated by VIAVI Solutions and announced by DST on 8 April 2026.
2

Which of the following is NOT one of the three historic firsts associated with India’s Census 2027?

Correct Answer: C — The three firsts for Census 2027 are: (1) first fully digital census, (2) first self-enumeration option (at se.census.gov.in in 16 languages), and (3) first caste enumeration since 1931. “Linguistic minority data” is a plausible-sounding distractor but is not among the announced firsts. Options A, B, and D are all genuine firsts — making C the odd one out in a “NOT” framed question.
3

With respect to PM MUDRA Yojana, consider the following statements:
1. MUDRA is a wholly-owned subsidiary of RBI.
2. The Tarun Plus category (up to Rs 20 lakh) was introduced in Union Budget 2024–25.
3. Women account for nearly 60% of MUDRA loan accounts.
Which of the above is/are correct?

Correct Answer: C — Statement 1 is incorrect: MUDRA is a wholly-owned subsidiary of SIDBI (Small Industries Development Bank of India), not RBI — a classic swap trap. Statement 2 is correct: Tarun Plus (Rs 10–20 lakh) was added in Union Budget 2024–25. Statement 3 is correct: women hold 59.81% of MUDRA accounts. Options A, B, and D all include Statement 1 and are therefore wrong.

National Safe Motherhood Day & Kasturba Gandhi

Digital Governance

What: 11 April is observed as National Safe Motherhood Day (NSMD) in India — the birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi (born 11 April 1869, Porbandar, Gujarat), popularly called ‘Ba’ (meaning ‘mother’ in Gujarati). The day was declared by the Government of India in 2003, initiated by WRAI (White Ribbon Alliance India), a coalition of 1,800+ organisations. India was the first country in the world to declare a national day for safe motherhood.

How: NSMD focuses on ensuring access to adequate maternal health care during pregnancy, delivery, and post-delivery. India’s Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) has improved dramatically: from 254 per lakh live births (2004–06) to 97 (2018–20). The SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) 3.1 target is an MMR below 70 per lakh live births by 2030. Kasturba Gandhi herself participated in the Champaran Satyagraha, Salt March, and Quit India Movement, and died on 22 February 1944 at Aga Khan Palace, Pune, while under house arrest with Mahatma Gandhi.

Why: This topic combines Social Issues (UPSC GS-I), Health Policy (GS-II), and historical biography, making it multi-paper relevant. Key MCQ anchors: the ‘first country’ distinction, WRAI, MMR figures (254→97), and the SDG 3.1 target. Kasturba Gandhi’s biography — birth date, birthplace, death details — is a perennial static GK item across UPSC, Banking, and SSC exams.

9th Indian Ocean Conference 2026 & Vision MAHASAGAR

International

What: The 9th Indian Ocean Conference (IOC) 2026 was held in Port Louis, Mauritius from 10–12 April 2026, with the theme ‘Collective Stewardship for Indian Ocean Governance’. It was jointly organised by the India Foundation and the Government of Mauritius (with MEA involvement). External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar attended and delivered the keynote address. The conference discusses maritime security, economic development, and environmental sustainability across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

How: On the sidelines, Jaishankar held bilateral meetings with Mauritius PM Ramgoolam (finalising a G2G oil+gas agreement, 100+ community projects, positioning a Defence Attaché), Seychelles FM Barry Faure (Special Economic Package; 250 MT food grains delivered), Nepal FM Shishir Khanal, and Bhutan FM D.N. Dhungyel. India’s Indian Ocean policy rests on two frameworks: SAGAR — Security and Growth for All in the Region (PM Modi, 2015) — and the newer Vision MAHASAGAR (Maritime and Humanitarian Assistance, Security, and Governance for All Resources), both emphasising India’s role as a ‘net security provider’ in the IOR.

Why: This is a core UPSC GS-II (International Relations, India’s neighbourhood policy) topic. MCQ anchors: venue (Port Louis), edition number (9th), theme (exact wording), MAHASAGAR full form, and SAGAR’s origin year (2015). The bilateral deliverables — G2G oil deal, Defence Attaché, food grains — test applied IR knowledge for UPSC Mains and IFS examinations.

Colonel Sonam Wangchuk (Retd.) & the Maha Vir Chakra

Defence & Geopolitics

What: Colonel Sonam Wangchuk (Retd.), known as the ‘Lion of Ladakh’, passed away on 10 April 2026 (heart attack, Leh; aged 61). Born 11 May 1964 in Sankar village, Leh, Ladakh, he was commissioned in 1987 into the 4th Battalion, Assam Regiment, and later served in the Ladakh Scouts (Indus Wing). He was awarded the MVC (Maha Vir Chakra) — India’s second-highest wartime gallantry award — for an action on 30 May 1999 in the Batalik Sector at over 5,500 m altitude, during which he counter-ambushed enemy forces, killed two, and recovered a Heavy Machine Gun (HMG) and Unmanned Machine Gun (UMG). Tributes were paid by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi.

How: India’s gallantry award hierarchy (wartime): Param Vir Chakra (PVC, highest) → Maha Vir Chakra (MVC, second) → Vir Chakra (VC, third). Peacetime equivalents: Ashoka Chakra → Kirti Chakra → Shaurya Chakra. The MVC was established on 26 January 1950 and is awarded for conspicuous gallantry in the presence of the enemy to both armed forces personnel and civilians. Colonel Wangchuk retired in 2018 after commanding posts ‘Sonam 1’ and ‘Sonam 2’ in Ladakh.

Why: Gallantry award hierarchy is a frequently tested static GK topic across UPSC Prelims, CDS, NDA, and SSC CGL. Key MCQ anchors: MVC rank (2nd highest wartime), establishment date (26 January 1950), and the wartime vs. peacetime hierarchy. The Kargil 1999 context links to UPSC GS-III (Internal Security, Defence) and is relevant for CDS/NDA current affairs sections. The distinction between wartime and peacetime award chains is a common trap question.
