Nuclear or Renewable? Rethinking India’s 100 GW Nuclear Ambition Against the Clean Energy Transition
Context from today’s quiz: India’s Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has announced a bold target — scaling nuclear power from 8.8 GW to 100 GW by 2047, requiring at least Rs 20 lakh crore in investment. This comes even as India has committed to achieving 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030 under its Paris Agreement NDCs. Simultaneously, the West Asia crisis has exposed India’s vulnerability to fossil fuel supply shocks, making the case for energy self-sufficiency more urgent than ever.
🤔 Your Perspective Matters
India stands at a pivotal energy crossroads. On one hand, nuclear power offers baseload reliability, low carbon emissions, and strategic energy independence. On the other, it requires enormous capital, long gestation periods (currently 13 years per project), and carries safety and waste management concerns. Meanwhile, solar and wind have become dramatically cheaper.

Should India fast-track its 100 GW nuclear target as the cornerstone of long-term energy security, or should the Rs 20 lakh crore be redirected toward accelerating domestic renewable energy and storage infrastructure instead?
  • The CEA suggested cutting nuclear project approval timelines from 13 years to 8-9 years. Is regulatory streamlining sufficient to make nuclear energy competitive with solar/wind on cost and speed — or are there structural bottlenecks beyond regulation?
  • India’s top FDI source is Singapore (USD 17.6 bn) and it is targeting Austrian investment via a Fast-Track Mechanism. Could India leverage such foreign investment channels specifically to fund green energy infrastructure or nuclear technology transfer — and what governance frameworks would be needed?
  • The SBI report projected India’s GDP at 6.8%–7.1% amid global headwinds. Given fiscal constraints, is it prudent for India to commit Rs 20 lakh crore to nuclear infrastructure now — or should energy investment priorities be sequenced differently based on risk, returns, and timeline?
