Observed on the second Saturday of May and October — in 2026: May 9 and October 10. Co-organised by CMS (Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals), AEWA (African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement), and EFTA (Environment for the Americas). PM MITRA Park — India’s First Textile Mega Hub
Full form: Pradhan Mantri Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel. India’s first functional PM MITRA Park inaugurated by PM Modi in Warangal, Telangana on 10 May 2026. Aims to create world-class industrial textile infrastructure. PM also laid foundation stones for projects worth ~Rs 9,400 crore in Karnataka & Telangana; includes NH-167 four-laning under Hyderabad-Panaji Economic Corridor. Supports Aatmanirbhar Bharat textile vision.

IUCAA–SAAO Collaboration & SALT Telescope
IUCAA = Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, based in Pune, Maharashtra. India’s High Commissioner Prabhat Kumar handed over the IUCAA banner to SAAO (South African Astronomical Observatory) at the Royal Observatory, Cape Town. Banner to be displayed at SALT (Southern African Large Telescope) — one of the largest optical telescopes in the Southern Hemisphere. Linked to India’s 2026 BRICS chairship activities.

West Bengal — Suvendu Adhikari as CM (2026)
Suvendu Adhikari sworn in as 9th Chief Minister of West Bengal — first BJP leader to hold the post. Oath administered by Governor Ravindra Narayana Ravi at Brigade Parade Grounds, Kolkata. BJP won 207 of 294 seats in 2026 WB Assembly elections; AITC secured 80 seats, ending Mamata Banerjee’s 15-year rule (CM since 2011). Results: part of the five-state/UT April 2026 election cycle.

AIFF–Odisha MoU & FIFA Talent Development Scheme
AIFF and Government of Odisha’s DSYS signed a renewed 5-year MoU for youth football development (May 2026). Signed by Vijay Yeddula (Director, DSYS) and M. Satyanarayana (Deputy Secy General, AIFF). Supported by FIFA’s Talent Development Scheme under the AIFF-FIFA Talent Academy initiative (first MoU: November 2023). AIFF handles technical/operational development; DSYS provides institutional, financial & infrastructure support.

DRDO Scramjet Combustor Test — Hypersonic Milestone
DRDL (Defence Research and Development Laboratory) tested an Actively Cooled Full-Scale Scramjet Combustor for 1,200+ seconds at the SCPT Facility, Hyderabad. Validates India’s Hypersonic Cruise Missile Development Programme. Separately, DRDO tested an advanced Agni missile with MIRV technology (Multiple Independently Targeted Re-Entry Vehicle) from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha — re-entry speeds nearing Mach 24.

Archery World Cup Stage 2 — India’s Gold (2026)
India’s women’s recurve team — Deepika Kumari, Ankita Bhakat, Kumkum Mohod — won gold at Shanghai Hyundai Archery World Cup Stage 2 (Shanghai, May 5–11, 2026), defeating China 5-4 in a shoot-off final (comeback from 2-4 down). India’s first women’s recurve team gold since 2021. Sahil Jadhav won bronze in Men’s Individual Compound (defeated Denmark’s Martin Damsbo 147-144). Türkiye topped medal tally.

SBI’s Ecowrap (May 2026): India’s real GDP growth projected at 7.2% in Q4FY26 (below the Feb 2026 advanced estimate of 7.3%). SCB credit growth: 16.1% (up from 11.0% last year). Full-year FY26 GDP: 7.5%; FY27 GDP: 6.6% (due to global geopolitical disruptions). Nominal GDP: ~12.2% for FY26. SCB = Scheduled Commercial Banks.

RBI–ECB MoU at BIS Meetings (May 2026)
RBI Governor Dr. Sanjay Malhotra and ECB President Christine Lagarde signed an MoU on the sidelines of Bank for International Settlements (BIS) meetings in Basel, Switzerland (May 2026). Updates the previous agreement of 2015. Framework covers: regular information exchange, policy dialogue, and technical cooperation. Aims to bolster institutional engagement on central banking practices and financial sector developments.
