Observed annually since 2005. 2026 theme: ‘Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer’. Organised by the World Hypertension League (WHL), affiliate of the International Society of Hypertension (ISH). Hypertension affects 1.28 billion adults aged 30–79 worldwide; only 1 in 5 adults with hypertension has it under control. Linked to SDG 3 — Good Health and Well-Being.

Ahmedabad–Dholera Semi High-Speed Rail Project
Approved by CCEA under PM Modi. Cost: Rs 20,667 crore; length: 134 km in Gujarat; double-line corridor. Unique as the first Indian Railways project using indigenous semi high-speed technology up to 220 kmph. Completion target: 2030–31. Same CCEA session also approved AAI land lease extension to MIHAN India Limited for Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, Nagpur.

Tripura — First State to Complete Deregulation Phase I & II
Phase I (Feb 2025): 23 priority areas — Revenue, Urban Development, Industries, Labour, Environment, Factories & Boilers, Fire, PCB, Digital Governance. Phase II (Jan 2026): 28 priority areas — same sectors plus Tourism, Health, Education. Total: 51 priority areas — making Tripura the first state in India to achieve this, boosting Ease of Doing Business.
International
Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS)
Established under UNGA Resolution 55/56 in 2000 to prevent ‘blood diamonds’ (conflict diamonds) from entering the legitimate global trade. India hosted KP Intersessional Meeting 2026, 11–14 May, Mumbai; India’s KP Chair: Suchindra Misra, Special Secretary, Dept of Commerce. KP comprises 60 Participants representing 86 countries; EU participates as a single bloc. Framework built on the ‘3Cs’: Credibility, Compliance, Consumer Confidence.

Indian Army–Indian Navy MoA on Affiliation
Signed in New Delhi, May 2026. Signed by: Lt Gen VPS Kaushik (Adjutant General, Indian Army) and Vice Admiral Gurcharan Singh (Chief of Personnel, Indian Navy). Aims to institutionalise structured professional exchanges, operational familiarisation, and coordinated multi-domain operations. Supports future-ready jointness, rapid decision-making, and enhanced protection of territorial and maritime interests.

UN Global Forest Goals Report 2026 — Key Findings
Launched at 21st session of UNFF, UN HQ, New York; prepared by UNDESA and UNFF Secretariat. Key findings: fuelwood demand (woodfuel & charcoal) is the leading driver of forest loss in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia; agricultural expansion is the biggest cause of deforestation globally. Global forest cover fell from 4.18 bn ha (2015) to 4.14 bn ha (2025) — annual net loss of 4.12 million ha. South America had the largest share of primary forest loss.

India’s First USD Debit Card for NRIs — ICICI Bank & Visa
Launched May 2026 through ICICI Bank’s IFSC Banking Unit (IBU) at GIFT City, Gandhinagar, Gujarat — India’s first IFSC. Partnership with Visa; built on the Visa Infinite platform (highest Visa tier). Features: retain earnings in USD, zero FX mark-up fee and GST, EMV chip technology, supports ATM, PoS, e-commerce, and GIFT City NetBanking. Targeted at NRI customers.

L&T + Exail Technologies — Unmanned MCM System
Strategic partnership announced May 2026. L&T (Mumbai) as prime contractor; Exail Technologies (France) as technology partner. Developing Unmanned Mine Countermeasure (MCM) Suite for 12 Mine Counter Measure Vessels (MCMVs) in Indian Navy’s programme. Suite features autonomous & remotely operated systems for detection, identification, and neutralisation of naval mines. Exail’s MCM technology is already operational with multiple navies worldwide.

Kaal Bhairava UCAV — India’s AI-Powered Combat Aircraft
Developed by Flying Wedge Defence & Aerospace (FWDA), part of ‘Operation 777’ (7 global HQs across 77 countries). Manufactured at FWDA’s first international facility in Portugal; developed with SKETCHPIXEL (European fighter jet simulation firm). Platform: MALE (Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance); range: 3,000 km; endurance: 30+ hours. India’s first AI-powered combat aircraft with an international manufacturing facility.

Sudhanshu Sil — Veteran CPI(M) Leader
Born 27 March 1945 in Calcutta (now Kolkata); passed away May 2026 at age 81. Served as Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillor for five terms (1990–2015); Member of Mayor-in-Council (Roads Dept, 1990–2005). MLA from Jorabagan constituency, WB (2001–2004). Elected MP in the 14th Lok Sabha (2004–2009) representing Calcutta North West constituency, West Bengal. Senior leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
