ICAR-CRRI’s Plant-OpenCRISPR1 (POC1) — World’s First AI Genome Editor for Plants
Developed by ICAR’s Central Rice Research Institute (CRRI), led by Dr. Kutubuddin Ali Molla, in Cuttack, Odisha, May 2026. Model crop: Rice. Journal: New Phytologist. Based on OpenCRISPR-1 (OC1), an AI-generated nuclease originally designed for human cells. CRRI is under ICAR, which falls under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW).

2026 International Booker Prize — ‘Taiwan Travelogue’
Won by Taiwanese author Yang Shuang-zi and Taiwanese-American translator Lin King. First Mandarin Chinese novel to win the International Booker Prize. Ceremony: Tate Modern, London. Publisher (English): Graywolf Press. Prize: £50,000 shared equally between author and translator. Also won: 2024 National Book Award for Translated Literature (USA) and Japan’s Best Translation Award (2024).

Gp Capt K.K. Venugopal (Retd.), Executive Group Director, HAL, elected first Indian Fellow of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots (SETP), USA, May 2026. Flew MiG-21 Bis FR; commanded No. 15 Squadron ‘Flying Lances’. Award: Vayu Sena Medal (VSM) in 2004 for safely handling post-takeoff technical failures. Commissioned: December 1989, Indian Air Force.

Exercise PRAGATI 2026 — India’s New Multilateral Military Exercise
Full form: Partnership of Regional Armies for Growth and Transformation in the Indian Ocean Region. Held at Umroi Military Station, Meghalaya; 12 nations participated including Bhutan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar. Dates: 20 May – 3 June 2026. Focus: counter-terrorism in semi-mountainous and jungle terrain; joint operations, intelligence sharing, cultural exchange.

Launched by NCDEX in collaboration with IIT Bombay (IIT-B) and anchored in IMD rainfall data. Based on Cumulative Deviation Rainfall (CDR) model — measures deviation from Long Period Average (LPA) during monsoon (June–September). Implementation: 1 June 2026. Key users: farmers, construction firms, power utilities, logistics operators, banks with agricultural loan portfolios.

GDP Forecast Revisions — UNDESA & ICRA (May 2026)
UNDESA revised India’s FY27 GDP to 6.4% (down from 6.6%) in World Economic Situation and Prospects 2026 — citing global uncertainties from the West Asia crisis. ICRA (India’s Credit Rating Agency) revised FY27 GDP to 6.2% (down 30 bps from 6.5%) — citing elevated crude oil prices. Both downward revisions reflect the impact of the ongoing West Asia conflict on India’s growth outlook.

Tata Power–Bhutan DGPC MoU — 5,000 MW Clean Energy
Tata Power Company Limited (TPCL) and Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPC) signed MoU in May 2026 for 5,000 MW clean energy capacity in Bhutan. Signatories: Dr. Praveer Sinha (CEO & MD, TPCL) and Dasho Chhewang Rinzin (MD, DGPC). Training via Tata Power Skill Development Institute (TPSDI). Tata Power to seek GoI approvals; DGPC to secure Royal Government of Bhutan clearances.

INS Sanghmitra — GRSE’s Shachi-class NGOPV
Launched by GRSE (Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers), Kolkata, on 20 May 2026. First of four NGOPVs (Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels) for the Indian Navy. Class: Shachi-class. Specs: ~113 m length, 14.6 m beam, 3,000 tonnes displacement, 23 knots max speed, 8,500 nautical miles endurance at 14 knots. Built under Buy Indian-IDDM category (Aatmanirbhar Bharat). Named after Sanghmitra, daughter of Emperor Ashoka.
