UNGA initially designated 29 Dec via A/RES/49/119 (1995); revised to 22 May via A/RES/55/201 (2001); first 22 May observance in 2002. CBD adopted at Nairobi Conference, 1992.

PM Modi’s Italy Visit — FAO Agricola Medal
PM Modi visited Italy 19–20 May 2026 at invitation of PM Giorgia Meloni — final leg of 5-nation tour (UAE, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Italy). Conferred FAO ‘Agricola Medal’ by DG Qu Dongyu at FAO HQ, Rome. India–Italy ties elevated to Special Strategic Partnership (SSP); bilateral trade target EUR 20 billion by 2029; INNOVIT India innovation hub launched; 2027 declared ‘Year of Culture and Tourism’; 10 MoUs signed.

World Bank Carbon Pricing Report 2026
13th edition of ‘State and Trends of Carbon Pricing 2026’ by World Bank Group. Carbon pricing systems cover 29% of global GHG emissions. Annual revenues: over USD 107 billion (2025) — tripled from under USD 30 billion (2016). Average direct carbon price: nearly USD 21/tCO2e (2026) vs USD 10 (2016). 87 carbon pricing policies implemented globally. India identified among largest new carbon markets following launch of Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS), 2026.

ANRF Convergence Research CoEs
Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) selected 10 institutions under its Convergence Research Centres of Excellence (CoE) programme. Funding: up to Rs 25 crore for 5 years each. Selected: IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Dharwad, IIM Jammu, IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, Chanakya University, NIAS Bengaluru, IHD Delhi, PSGR Krishnammal College. Launched by Union Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (MSJE). JEEVAN = Joint Elderly Empowerment & Virtual Assistance Network — mobile app for senior citizens (schemes, welfare, emergency assistance). SHATAYU = Senior Holistic Care Assistance and Training For Your Utility — geriatric caregiver dashboard with district/state-level data. Unveiled at virtual national workshop on ‘Creating a Well-Functioning Care Economy’ by DoSJE.

ITBP & BSF All-Women Everest Expeditions
ITBP‘s first all-women international mountaineering expedition summited Mt Everest (8,848 m) via South Col Route from Nepal — 14-member team (11 climbers + 3 support). Simultaneously, BSF ‘Mission Vande Mataram’ (Diamond Jubilee — 60 years) with 4 women constables: Kouser Fatima, Munmun Ghosh, Rabeka Singh, Tsering Chorol. Both supported ‘Clean Himalaya — Save Glacier’ campaign. Both are CAPFs under MHA.

BIT Mesra–NESAC MoU on Geospatial Tech
Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) Mesra and North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) signed MoU in Ranchi, Jharkhand. NESAC operates under Department of Space (DoS) and North Eastern Council (NEC). Tenure: 5 years with extension provision. Areas: geospatial technologies, Geospatial AI (GeoAI), remote sensing, higher education. Signed by Dr SP Aggarwal (Director, NESAC) and Prof. Indranil Manna (VC, BIT Mesra).

Bharat Digital Samvad & Data Swaraj
Bharath Digital Infrastructure Association (BDIA) launched ‘Bharat Digital Samvad’ — India’s first dedicated national forum on digital sovereignty and infrastructure policy, in New Delhi. Promotes the principle of ‘Data Swaraj’ — India’s sovereign right to control how its data is collected, stored, governed, and monetised. India’s digital economy target: USD 1 trillion by 2030. Focus: cloud, AI, cybersecurity, Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), data platforms.
