Originally proposed at 1992 Earth Summit, Rio de Janeiro by Canada. Organised by DOALOS (Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea). Oceans: 71% of Earth’s surface, 50% of world’s oxygen, 80% of all life. Linked to SDG 14 (Life Below Water).

Surha Taal (Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary), Ballia, Uttar Pradesh — India’s 100th Ramsar Site and 13th in UP. Global total: 2,595 Ramsar sites. Designated by MoEF&CC; announced on World Environment Day (5 June 2026). India: country with most Ramsar sites in Asia. First Indian Ramsar sites (1981): Chilika Lake (Odisha) and Keoladeo NP (Rajasthan). Ramsar Convention: adopted 1971, HQ: Gland, Switzerland.

India’s FY26 Real GDP: 7.7% (New 2022-23 Base Year)
NSO (MoSPI) Provisional Estimates: India’s real GDP grew at 7.7% in FY26 — up 10 bps from the February estimate of 7.6%; 60 bps higher than FY25 (7.1%). New base year: 2022-23 (replaced 2011-12, introduced February 2026). Q4 FY26: 7.8% (beat RBI’s 7% forecast). Real GDP: Rs 323.12 lakh crore; Nominal GDP: Rs 346.36 lakh crore (8.9% growth). Fiscal deficit: 4.4% of GDP. Note: 7.4% was First Advance Estimate (Jan 2026).

IndiaAI Mission Leadership Change — Saurabh Vijay Succeeds Abhishek Singh
Saurabh Vijay (CEO, UIDAI; 1998-batch IAS, Maharashtra cadre) takes additional charge as CEO, IndiaAI Mission (MeitY). Succeeds Abhishek Singh, now Director General, NTA. Sudeep Shrivastava (Joint Secretary, MeitY) assumes COO, IndiaAI Mission. IndiaAI Mission operationalises India’s National AI Mission (NAIM) — building India’s comprehensive AI ecosystem. Previously, Vijay served as Principal Secretary (Expenditure), Finance Dept., Maharashtra.

Air India–Riyadh Air MoU; Tata Group Privatisation (2022)
Air India privatised by Tata Group in 2022. Post-privatisation: 25 codeshare agreements and 120 interline partnerships. Riyadh Air — Saudi Arabia’s new premium national carrier — signed MoU in June 2026. Focus: premium travel, seamless bookings, hub connectivity (Delhi, Mumbai ↔ Riyadh). Plans include codeshare, interline arrangements, loyalty programmes, and cargo services. Subject to regulatory approval.

HP–UNDP MoU & Safai Mitra Scheme — CM Sukhu
Himachal Pradesh signed MoU with UNDP for climate-resilient development and Himalayan ecosystem protection.
