2026 Global Peace Index: India Slips to 127th

International

What: The 2026 Global Peace Index (GPI), published by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), Australia, ranked India 127th out of 163 states — a decline from 115th in 2025, with a score of 2.409 (a 2.9% worsening). This is the 20th edition of the index. Iceland topped the rankings for the 19th consecutive year with a score of 1.161.

How: The GPI measures peacefulness across 163 countries using 23 indicators covering three domains: societal safety and security, ongoing domestic and international conflict, and militarisation. Russia ranked least peaceful at 163rd (score 3.367). The Top 5 were Iceland, New Zealand, Switzerland, Slovenia, and Ireland.

Why: Global indices featuring India’s rank are high-frequency topics in UPSC Prelims, SSC CGL, and banking exams. Students should note the publisher (IEP), India’s rank change (115→127), the top-ranked country (Iceland), and the least peaceful country (Russia, 163rd).

DRDO Conducts 3 Consecutive BMD Phase-II Flight Tests

Defence & Geopolitics

What: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted three consecutive Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) Phase-II flight tests at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) Chandipur, Odisha. The system demonstrated the capability to intercept targets up to Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) class, with a long-range reach of 5,000 km and medium-range of 2,000 km.

How: The target missile was launched from Launch Complex-IV (LC-IV) at Dhamra, Odisha. During the same test series, the maiden flight test of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile – Medium Range (NASM-MR) was also conducted, further expanding India’s indigenous missile arsenal under DRDO’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) legacy.

Why: DRDO milestones and India’s indigenous defence capabilities are recurring themes in UPSC Science & Technology and defence sections. Key facts: location (ITR Chandipur), phase (Phase-II), capability (ICBM-class interception), and the co-tested NASM-MR missile.

First NDA Women Officers Commissioned — A Historic Milestone

Polity

What: Seventeen women cadets of the 148th National Defence Academy (NDA) Course — who joined in August 2022 — were commissioned as officers across the three services: 9 into the Indian Army (IA) at the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun; 5 into the Indian Air Force (IAF) at the Air Force Academy (AFA), Dundigal, Hyderabad; and 3 into the Indian Navy (IN) at the Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala, Kerala.

How: Their entry into NDA was enabled by a landmark Supreme Court ruling in 2021, which upheld the right of women to join NDA under Articles 14 (Right to Equality) and 16 (Equality of Opportunity in Public Employment) of the Constitution. The 148th Course marked the first batch to complete the full NDA training cycle and be commissioned.

Why: This topic intersects polity (fundamental rights), defence (military training academies), and gender equality — all high-yield UPSC and state PSC themes. Key facts: SC ruling year (2021), Articles invoked (14 & 16), total commissioned (17), and all three services’ commissioning venues.

Varya: India’s First Indigenous Distilled Video-Generating AI Model

Frontier Tech

What: Varya is India’s first indigenous distilled video story-generating Artificial Intelligence (AI) model, developed by Avataar.ai and launched on 12 June 2026 in New Delhi. It was unveiled under the IndiaAI Mission — the Government of India’s flagship initiative to build a robust domestic AI ecosystem — in the presence of S. Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

How: Varya employs a distillation-based architecture that compresses the video creation workflow from 50 steps to just 4, following the pipeline: Idea → Video → Story. This results in up to 10x efficiency gains and reduces production cost to approximately ₹0.48 per second, making professional-grade video creation accessible at scale for Indian creators and businesses.

Why: Indigenous AI development is a key theme under UPSC Science & Technology and Digital India sections. Varya’s launch signals India’s ambition to move from AI consumption to AI production. Key facts: developer (Avataar.ai), launch date (12 June 2026), steps reduced (50→4), cost (~₹0.48/sec), and parent mission (IndiaAI Mission, MeitY).

India Post Drone Mail Service: Bridging the Last Mile in Himachal Pradesh

Digital Governance

What: India Post, under the Department of Posts (DoP), Ministry of Communications, launched a drone-based mail delivery service on the Mandi Head Post Office to Rehardhar Branch Post Office route in Himachal Pradesh. The drone service slashed transit time from over 2 hours (by road over hilly terrain) to approximately 7 minutes — demonstrating the transformative potential of drone logistics in remote geographies.

How: The service uses autonomous drones approved under India’s drone policy framework to carry mail packets across difficult terrain where road connectivity is limited. The DoP plans to expand the drone network to approximately 150 postal routes across Himachal Pradesh and Assam within 2–3 months, targeting hilly and geographically challenging regions where conventional delivery is slow and costly.

Why: Drone policy, Digital India, and last-mile governance are important topics for UPSC GS-II (governance) and GS-III (technology). This initiative connects drone regulation, postal services modernisation, and rural connectivity — all separately examined themes. Remember: route (Mandi–Rehardhar, HP), ministry (MoC), expansion target (~150 routes, HP and Assam).
