TOP500 Supercomputer Rankings 2026 — India at 32nd

Science & Research

What: The 67th edition of the TOP500 Supercomputer Rankings was released at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC) 2026 in Hamburg, Germany. China’s ‘LineShine’ system at the National Supercomputing Center, Shenzhen, claimed the top spot, dethroning the United States’ ‘El Capitan’. India’s ‘Shakti Cloud’ ranked 32nd globally with a performance of 84.31 petaflops.

How: The TOP500 list ranks the world’s most powerful non-distributed computer systems based on benchmark performance measured in petaflops (quadrillions of floating-point operations per second). LineShine is approximately 26 times faster than India’s Shakti Cloud. The USA leads in the total number of systems with 161 entries, followed by Japan (44) and Germany (41). China has 31 systems; India holds 16th place with 7 systems in the list.

Why: Supercomputing rankings are asked in UPSC Prelims (Science & Technology), SSC CGL, and state PSC exams. Key facts to remember: India’s system name (Shakti Cloud), its rank (32nd), China’s top system (LineShine), and India’s overall country rank (16th with 7 systems). This also links to India’s push under the National Supercomputing Mission.

Bangladesh Becomes 27th Member of IBCA

Environment

What: Bangladesh has joined the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) as its 27th member state. The Cabinet of Bangladesh approved the membership on 22 May 2026. IBCA is an India-led initiative focused on the conservation of seven big cat species worldwide, and Bangladesh’s membership is significant due to the Bengal tiger and leopard populations in the Sundarbans delta.

How: The process was initiated in April 2026 through diplomatic engagement between Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma and Bangladesh Environment Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo. IBCA was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2023 with an initial corpus of ₹150 crore for five years. It aims to protect seven big cats: lion, tiger, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar, and puma across their range countries.

Why: IBCA is a high-frequency topic in UPSC Prelims (Environment & Biodiversity) and competitive exams that cover international conservation bodies. Crucial facts: 27th member, Cabinet approval date (22 May 2026), India as the founding country, 7 big cats protected, and the Sundarbans connection. Also note: Sundarbans is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the largest mangrove forest in the world.

C-DOT Opens 4th Centre of Excellence at IIT Hyderabad

Frontier Tech

What: The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), India’s premier telecom R&D centre, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Hyderabad (IITH) to establish its 4th Centre of Excellence (CoE). The CoE will focus on next-generation technologies including 5G/6G, quantum communication, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence. The MoU was signed by B.S. Murty (IIT Hyderabad) and Rajkumar Upadhyay (C-DOT).

How: C-DOT’s earlier three CoEs were set up at IIT Kanpur, IIT Gandhinagar, and IIT Roorkee. The IITH CoE builds on existing synergies — WiSig Networks, a startup spun out of IIT Hyderabad, is already linked to C-DOT’s ecosystem. The CoEs serve as collaborative hubs between academia and government to develop indigenous telecom solutions and reduce dependence on imported technology.

Why: This is relevant for UPSC, GATE, and state PSC exams covering Science & Technology and governance themes. Key facts: C-DOT’s 4th CoE, IIT Hyderabad location, focus areas (5G/6G, quantum, cybersecurity, AI), and the sequence of previous CoEs. It also connects to India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat goals in telecom and the national 6G vision document released in 2023.

🧠 Mini-Quiz: Test Your Recall

3 questions from today’s one-liners. No peeking!

1

Which supercomputer topped the TOP500 Rankings in 2026, displacing the USA’s El Capitan?

Correct Answer: C — China’s LineShine, located at the National Supercomputing Center in Shenzhen, claimed the top position in the 67th edition of the TOP500 list (ISC 2026, Hamburg). It is approximately 26 times faster than India’s Shakti Cloud, which ranks 32nd. Frontier (USA) is 3rd; Jupiter (Germany) is 5th.
2

Bangladesh recently became which numbered member of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA)?

Correct Answer: D — Bangladesh joined IBCA as its 27th member, with Cabinet approval on 22 May 2026. IBCA is India’s initiative to protect 7 big cat species globally (lion, tiger, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar, puma). Bangladesh’s membership is particularly significant due to Bengal tigers and leopards in the Sundarbans.
3

C-DOT signed an MoU with IIT Hyderabad for its 4th Centre of Excellence. Which of the following was NOT one of the earlier three C-DOT CoE locations?

Correct Answer: C — The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) established its first three Centres of Excellence at IIT Kanpur, IIT Gandhinagar, and IIT Roorkee. NITI Aayog Trade Watch — 8th Edition: Pharma Focus

Economy

What: NITI Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India) released the 8th edition of its Trade Watch Quarterly report, focusing on the pharmaceutical sector with special emphasis on Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). The global pharma market was valued at USD 1.3 trillion in 2025. India’s pharmaceutical sector contributes 1.7% to GDP and accounts for 7.2% of manufacturing Gross Value Added (GVA).

How: India’s total merchandise trade grew 5.4% in FY2025–26 to reach USD 1.84 trillion. The report highlights India’s role as the “pharmacy of the world,” supplying generic medicines globally. The focus on APIs is critical because China currently dominates API supply chains, and India’s API self-sufficiency is a strategic priority under Atmanirbhar Bharat — supported by the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for bulk drugs.

Why: Trade-related data from NITI Aayog reports is regularly tested in UPSC Prelims (Economy section), RBI Grade B, and NABARD exams. Key numbers: USD 1.3 Tn global pharma market, 1.7% of India’s GDP, 7.2% of manufacturing GVA, USD 1.84 Tn total India trade (FY26, +5.4%). The API-China dependency angle is also important for Mains (GS-III: Economy & Security).

Two New Snail Species Discovered in Meghalaya Caves

Environment

What: The Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) discovered two new snail species from limestone caves in Meghalaya. Georissa meghalayaensis was found at the entrance of Krem Puri cave and has an orangish-red shell. Acmella bensoni was found in both Krem Puri and Arwah caves; it has a translucent whitish shell and is named after W.H. Benson, a 19th-century British naturalist. The findings were published in the European Journal of Taxonomy.

How: Meghalaya lies within the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot, one of the world’s 36 recognised biodiversity hotspots. The state has approximately 1,200 limestone caves, making it a hotspot for cave-dwelling (troglophilic) and new species discovery. Cave ecosystems are fragile and often harbour endemic species found nowhere else on earth. ATREE is a Bengaluru-based research institution specialising in ecology and biodiversity.

Why: New species discoveries — especially from biodiversity hotspots — are frequently asked in UPSC Prelims (Environment), SSC exams, and state PSCs. Remember: ATREE (not ZSI) discovered these; Krem Puri and Arwah are the cave locations; the publication journal is European Journal of Taxonomy. Meghalaya’s Indo-Burma Hotspot tag and its ~1,200 caves are useful contextual facts for Mains essay or GS-III.

ZSI Discovers Two New Moth Species in Kerala & Karnataka

Science & Research

What: The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) discovered two new moth species in June 2026. Antaram idukki is a tiger moth belonging to the subfamily Arctiinae of the family Erebidae, found in Idukki district, Kerala. Mimeusemia kali is a forester moth belonging to the family Noctuidae, discovered in Kali Tiger Reserve, Karnataka. Both species serve as ecological indicators of forest health.

How: The discoveries were made in collaboration with the Natural History Museum, London. Antaram idukki was published in the Journal of the Lepidopterists’ Society; Mimeusemia kali was published in Zootaxa, both peer-reviewed entomology journals. ZSI, headquartered in Kolkata and currently headed by Dr. Dhriti Banerjee, is India’s apex body for faunal survey and research under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

Why: ZSI discoveries appear frequently in UPSC Prelims and current affairs rounds of banking exams. Critical facts: ZSI HQ (Kolkata), head (Dhriti Banerjee), two species names and their locations (Idukki-Kerala, Kali Tiger Reserve-Karnataka), families (Erebidae, Noctuidae), and their role as ecological indicators. Kali Tiger Reserve (also called Dandeli-Anshi Tiger Reserve) in Karnataka is worth noting for geography-based questions.
