Observed annually on 26 June. Established in 2019 by Stephen Gill, former President of the Institute of Refrigeration, UK. 2026 marks the 8th edition; theme: ‘Cool Intelligence’. Covers RACHP (Refrigeration, Air-Conditioning & Heat Pump) technologies. Not a UN-proclaimed day. UNEP’s OzonAction ran the ‘Five Days of Cool Intelligence’ campaign from 22–26 June 2026.

International Day of Deafblindness — 27 June
Proclaimed via UNGA Resolution A/RES/79/294 (adopted 16 June 2025) in honour of Helen Keller’s 145th birth anniversary. First observed: 27 June 2025. Presented by Hrvoje Ćurić Hrvatinić of Croatia. Deafblindness = combined loss of vision and hearing. DeafBlind Awareness movement began in 1984 (US President Reagan). Deafblind International Awareness Week 2026: 25 June – 1 July 2026.

RBI’s Revised NBFC Scale Based Regulation (June 2026)
RBI (HQ: Mumbai; est: 1 April 1935) issued the Second Amendment Directions, 2026, effective 24 June 2026. NBFCs with assets of Rs 1 lakh crore or more automatically classified as NBFC–Upper Layer (NBFC-UL). Threshold reviewed every 3 years (earlier: 5 years). Government-owned NBFCs in UL category are exempt from mandatory stock exchange listing within 3 years.

World’s First Nuclear-Based Hydrogen Production Facility
Inaugurated by DAE Secretary Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty at IGCAR, Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu. Uses the Copper–Chlorine (Cu–Cl) Thermochemical Cycle with heat from the Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR). Jointly commissioned by BARC and IGCAR (both under DAE). A global first — enables carbon-free hydrogen production with zero greenhouse gas emissions. Indigenously developed.

Amazon’s USD 48 Billion India Investment (2026–2030)
Announced 25 June 2026 following a meeting between Andy Jassy (CEO, Amazon) and PM Modi. Total: USD 48 billion; of which USD 13 billion for AI & cloud (AWS). Expands data centres in Mumbai and Hyderabad; opens 20+ fulfilment centres. By 2030: 3.8 million jobs, USD 80 billion in e-commerce exports, AI education to 4 million govt school students.

India’s 1st CoE on Plant Cell Fermentation — IIT Madras
Launched by Herbalife International India in partnership with IIT Madras at IIT-M Research Park, Chennai. Launched in presence of Dr. N. Kalaisevi (DG, CSIR) and Prof. V. Kamakoti (Director, IIT-M). Promotes sustainable production of herbal biomass, enriched herbal extracts, and high-value phytochemicals. IIT Madras: established 1959, under Ministry of Education.

LoI signed between Shireesh Kedare (Director, IIT Bombay) and Timothy E. Sams (President, SUNY Old Westbury), in presence of Consul General Binaya Pradhan. Sub-campus at Long Island, New York; first academic session: 2027. Covers engineering, AI, and emerging technologies. Advances NEP 2020 and India–USA higher education collaboration.

Approved by ADB (HQ: Manila; est: 1966) as a Small Expenditure Financing Facility (SEFF). Covers 6 NE states: Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura. Aligned with National Bamboo Mission (NBM). Key requirement: at least one women-led manufacturing facility per state. Supports bamboo cultivation, production, and marketing across the region.

Goldman Sachs Revises India GDP Forecast — June 2026
Report: ‘India: Improved Macro Outlook after the USA-Iran Deal’. CY26 GDP raised by 30 bps to 6.8%; FY2026-27 raised by 40 bps to 6.5%. Q1 CY26 growth: 7.8% YoY (~50 bps above earlier estimate). Inflation lowered 20 bps to 4.4%; CAD reduced to 1.1% of GDP; BoP surplus: 0.7% of GDP.

WMO’s 71st IMO Prize — Dr. Florence Rabier (June 2026)
Announced by WMO (HQ: Geneva; est: 1950) to French meteorologist Dr. Florence Rabier. She was Director-General of ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) from 2016 to 2025. Currently: President of European Meteorological Society (EMS) and NED of UK Met Office. Contributions: Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP), satellite data assimilation, AI-based forecasting. Prize lecture at WMC Cg-20 in 2027.
