ISRO Conducts Record-Thrust Test of Next-Generation Semi-Cryogenic Engine

ISRO successfully conducted a hot test of the Semi-Cryogenic Engine Power Head Test Article (PHTA) at 88% of its 175-tonne target thrust at the ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPC), Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu — the 8th in a series of PHTA hot tests.

🚀 Semi-Cryogenic vs Cryogenic

Unlike fully cryogenic engines that need both fuel and oxidiser stored at ultra-low temperatures, semi-cryogenic engines use refined kerosene as fuel with only liquid oxygen (LOX) as the cryogenic oxidiser — offering higher thrust efficiency and easier handling.
