Think & Discuss
India’s Space Ambitions vs. Real-World Priorities: Should Gaganyaan Be Fast-Tracked, and What Should India’s Human Spaceflight Programme Prioritise?
Context from today’s quiz: ISRO’s SOLVE ground test marks a key milestone for Gaganyaan, India’s first human spaceflight programme. Meanwhile, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi broke a 36-year-old record, becoming India’s youngest international cricket debutant, and Tshering Choden from Sikkim is quietly scaling the Seven Summits. Taken together, these stories reveal India’s extraordinary depth of ambition across space, sport, and individual achievement — yet Gaganyaan, announced in 2018 and repeatedly delayed, raises genuine questions about whether India’s space infrastructure, training ecosystems, and long-term vision for human spaceflight are truly aligned.
🤔 Your Perspective Matters
India’s SOLVE test for Gaganyaan validates another step in crewed spaceflight capability. But human spaceflight is extraordinarily expensive and risky. In a country with pressing developmental priorities — healthcare, clean air (as the Rs 8,300 crore Delhi project shows), and financial inclusion — the cost-benefit of Gaganyaan is actively debated.

Should India fast-track Gaganyaan as a strategic and scientific imperative — or would the resources be better spent on uncrewed missions, satellite infrastructure, or pressing developmental needs like NCAP?
  • SOLVE simulates parachute deceleration at 10–17 km. Gaganyaan aims to send 3 crew to LEO for 3 days. Is this a sufficient first-step mission, or does India need a more ambitious long-term roadmap (lunar landing, space station) to justify the investment?
  • Vaibhav Sooryavanshi at 15 and Tshering Choden from Sikkim both reflect India’s talent beyond its traditional metros. How should India design its Gaganyaan astronaut selection to reflect the country’s diversity — and does the constitutional framework of equal opportunity (Article 16) have a role to play here?
  • Delhi’s Rs 8,300 crore Clean Air project targets PM2.5 reductions that could save thousands of lives annually. Gaganyaan’s estimated cost exceeds Rs 10,000 crore. How should India’s government publicly frame and justify the dual expenditure on both space and public health infrastructure?
