India’s Defence Modernisation: With a New CDS, a New Coast Guard Vessel, and Aviation Ambitions — Is India’s Strategic Readiness Keeping Pace With Its Geopolitical Responsibilities?
Context from today’s quiz: On 9 May 2026, India announced its 3rd Chief of Defence Staff (Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani), commissioned a new Coast Guard fast patrol vessel (ICGS Achal) under Make in India, and is targeting the world’s 3rd-largest civil aviation market by 2035. Simultaneously, the country is updating its National Accounts base year, commemorating 11 years of Jan Suraksha financial inclusion schemes, and elevating its partnership with Vietnam to Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership status — all in the same week. These developments span defence, diplomacy, financial inclusion, and economic statistics simultaneously.
🤔 Your Perspective Matters
India’s appointment of its 3rd CDS, commissioning of indigenous naval assets, and civil aviation targets all point to an expanding strategic footprint. But true readiness requires more than hardware and appointments — it demands institutional depth, inclusive human capital, and data-driven governance.

Is India’s pace of defence indigenisation (Make in India, Aatmanirbhar Bharat) sufficient to reduce strategic vulnerabilities — or is the emphasis on platforms overshadowing equally critical investments in human capital, statistical infrastructure, and social security?
  • ICGS Achal was built with >50% indigenous components. Given India’s civil aviation target of 2,250 aircraft by 2035, should aircraft leasing infrastructure at GIFT City be treated as a national strategic asset — or will over-reliance on foreign lessors create a new form of strategic dependency?
  • The Jan Suraksha schemes (PMSBY, PMJJBY, APY) have enrolled hundreds of crore citizens in 11 years — yet APY targets only the unorganised sector. Does India’s social security architecture adequately cover the most vulnerable? Should PFRDA’s mandate be expanded?
  • Kuljeet Kaur Marhas became the first Indian woman Fellow of the Meteoritical Society, and NCRB data captures crime across 19 metro cities. How should India’s institutions — from ISRO to NCRB — use data and representation milestones to build more inclusive scientific and governance ecosystems?
