Think & Discuss
India’s Digital Health Revolution: Can JANANI, MIDAS, and AIKosh Together Eliminate the Maternal Mortality Gap — or Will Digital Exclusion Leave the Most Vulnerable Behind?
Context from today’s quiz: India launched the JANANI platform to create a longitudinal digital record for every woman from pregnancy through the neonatal stage, integrating with U-WIN, POSHAN, and ABHA. The same week, IndiaAI and ICMR signed an MoU to build AI-powered healthcare using the MIDAS framework, with anonymised datasets shared via AIKosh. Together, these initiatives represent India’s most ambitious push yet toward a unified digital health architecture. Yet India still grapples with deep rural-urban divides in healthcare access, low Aadhaar penetration in some tribal areas, and a shortage of trained health workers at last-mile delivery points.
🤔 Your Perspective Matters
Digital health platforms like JANANI promise to transform maternal and child care — but technology alone cannot substitute for physical infrastructure, trained personnel, and trust-building in underserved communities. The integration of AI (via IndiaAI–ICMR MoU) raises additional questions about data privacy, consent, and algorithmic bias in healthcare decision-making.

Should India prioritise deepening the reach of existing digital health platforms (JANANI, ABHA, U-WIN) before layering AI models via MIDAS — or is simultaneous advancement the only way to bridge India’s healthcare gap at scale?
  • JANANI relies on Aadhaar-based OTP authentication and QR-enabled MCH cards. For migratory populations and tribal communities with low digital literacy, does this create a risk of exclusion — and how should MoHFW address this structurally?
  • The IndiaAI–ICMR MoU plans to share anonymised, ethics-approved health datasets via AIKosh. What governance framework should India establish to ensure data sovereignty, patient consent, and prevention of algorithmic bias in AI-driven maternal health decisions?
  • Phoenix Geocell turns plastic waste into road infrastructure, and JANANI turns fragmented health records into a longitudinal care system. Both reflect a theme of converting existing resources into resilient systems. What other sectors — education, water, agriculture — could benefit most from India applying this ‘convert and integrate’ approach to legacy infrastructure?
