Observed annually on 8–9 May. Proclaimed by UNGA resolution A/RES/59/26 on 22 November 2004. First observed in 2005 (60th anniversary of WWII & UN). 2026 marks the 81st anniversary of WWII’s end. Reaffirmed by resolutions A/RES/64/257 (2010) and A/RES/69/267 (2015). Goal: promote global peace, security, and dialogue among former warring nations.

JANANI Platform — MoHFW’s Digital Maternal Health System
JANANI = Journey of Antenatal, Natal and Neonatal Integrated Care. Launched at the 10th National Summit on Innovation and Inclusivity, Chandigarh. Upgrades the RCH (Reproductive and Child Health) portal. Creates a Longitudinal Digital Record System (LDRS) for women across all reproductive stages. Features: QR-enabled MCH cards, automated high-risk pregnancy alerts, Aadhaar-OTP authentication. Integrated with U-WIN, POSHAN, and ABHA platforms.

Phoenix Geocell — India’s First Plastic Waste Geocell
Developed by CSIR-CRRI (HQ: New Delhi) and BPCL (Maharatna PSU). India’s first technical textile geocell from end-of-life mixed plastic waste. Structure: 3D honeycomb filled with soil/gravel/sand for road durability & soil stability. Pilot: DND-Faridabad-KMP Expressway (NH-148NA), 11 July 2025, supported by NHAI. Recognised by India Book of Records and Asia Book of Records. Applications: road construction, weak soil stabilisation, slope protection.

IndiaAI–ICMR MoU — AI in Healthcare
IndiaAI (under MeitY) and ICMR (apex biomedical research body under MoHFW) signed an MoU for a unified AI ecosystem in healthcare. ICMR contributes health datasets under the MIDAS (Medical Information Data for AI Solutions) framework. IndiaAI provides compute infrastructure and dataset platforms. AIKosh platform will share anonymised, ethics-approved health datasets, AI models, and toolkits for researchers, startups, and innovators.

GSTAT Principal Bench — Empowered as NAAAR
NAAAR (National Appellate Authority for Advance Rulings) — effective 1 April 2026. Notified under Section 101A(1A) of the CGST Act, 2017 on GST Council’s recommendations. Mandate: resolve disputes from divergent advance rulings across states/UTs (under Section 101B). GSTAT Principal Bench constituted under Section 109; comprises President + 1 judicial member + 2 technical members. President of GSTAT acts as NAAAR’s Presiding Officer.

RBI Penalties — YES Bank & Hinduja Housing Finance
YES Bank: penalised Rs 31.80 lakh for KYC non-compliance (failure to use KYC Identifier from Central KYC Records Registry). Hinduja Housing Finance: penalised Rs 1.80 lakh for governance non-compliance — over 30% change in directors (excluding independent directors) without prior RBI approval. Combined: Rs 33.60 lakh. Both based on statutory inspections (financial positions: 31 March 2025). Hinduja regulated under Section 52A, NHB Act, 1987.

BIS — ISO TC 20/SC 14 Plenary Hosted in India
BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) — est. 1986; under Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA), MoCAF&PD. Hosted 35th Plenary of ISO TC 20/SC 14 (‘Space Systems and Operations’) at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi (4–8 May 2026) — first time in India. Participants: 131 delegates from 13 countries, including ISRO. Reflects India’s growing role in global space standards, aligned with IN-SPACe reforms.

Bulgaria — Rumen Radev Becomes Prime Minister
Rumen Radev (Progressive Bulgaria party) elected PM with 124/240 votes. Bulgaria’s 8th parliamentary election in 5 years (after PM Rosen Zhelyazkov’s government collapsed, December 2025). Unique journey: Radev resigned as President (January 2026) to contest elections — first Bulgarian head of state to do so. Previously: Commander, Bulgarian Air Force (2014–2016); President 2017–2026 (re-elected 2021). Awards: Order of Merit (Italy, 2024), Order of Prince Henry (Portugal, 2022).

Costa Rica — Laura Fernández Delgado, 50th President
Laura Virginia Fernández Delgado (age 39) sworn in on 8 May 2026 as 50th President of Costa Rica, for 2026–2030 term (National Stadium, San José); succeeded Rodrigo Chaves Robles. Party: PPSO (Partido del Pueblo Soberano) — won 31 of 57 seats (absolute majority) in February 2026 unicameral elections. Second woman as president, after Laura Chinchilla Miranda (2010–2014). Previously: Minister of National Planning (2022–2025) and Minister of the Presidency (2024–2025).

NIScPR–RIS MoU — Science Diplomacy & STI Policy
CSIR-NIScPR (National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research; under MoS&T) signed MoU with RIS (Research and Information System for Developing Countries), which functions under MEA (Ministry of External Affairs). Goal: strengthen STI policy research and science diplomacy. Focus: Global South working groups, joint publications, traditional knowledge, and inclusive & sustainable development. Signed in presence of Prof. Sachin Kumar Sharma (DG, RIS) and Dr Geeta Vani Rayasam (Director, CSIR-NIScPR).
