India’s Maritime Push into Africa: Strategic Depth or Overreach?
Context from today’s quiz: India launched its first multilateral maritime exercise with African nations β€” AIKEYME 2025 β€” under PM Modi’s MAHASAGAR vision, co-hosted with Tanzania and involving 8 African coastal nations. Simultaneously, INS Sunayna was redesignated as ‘IOS SAGAR’, signalling a deliberate rebranding of India’s naval presence as a regional, Indian Ocean-wide force rather than a purely national one.
πŸ€” Your Perspective Matters
India’s MAHASAGAR doctrine and AIKEYME exercise signal an ambitious leap in India’s maritime diplomacy β€” positioning the Indian Navy not merely as a coastal defence force but as a net security provider across the Indian Ocean Region. But with China’s expanding naval footprint in the same waters, and African nations increasingly courted by multiple powers, India faces both opportunity and strategic risk.

Can India sustain a credible maritime partnership with Africa, or does MAHASAGAR risk becoming a geopolitical statement without the naval capacity, diplomatic consistency, and economic leverage to back it up?
  • China’s String of Pearls strategy has given it port access across the Indian Ocean. How does India’s MAHASAGAR vision differ in approach, and is the difference sufficient to counter Chinese influence among African littoral states?
  • Naval exercises like AIKEYME build interoperability, but African nations also need infrastructure investment, trade, and development partnerships. Is India offering enough beyond defence cooperation to be a compelling partner for African nations?
  • The redesignation of INS Sunayna as ‘IOS SAGAR’ suggests India is rebranding its naval identity for a multilateral audience. What are the strategic and diplomatic implications of an Indian warship operating under a non-national designation?
