International Nurses Day — 12 May
Observed annually on 12 May to commemorate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), founder of modern nursing. Officially adopted by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) in 1974; ICN has led the observance since 1965. On 12 May 2026, President Droupadi Murmu conferred the National Florence Nightingale Awards 2026 to 15 nursing personnel at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

VB-G RAM G Act, 2025 — Replaces MGNREGA
Viksit Bharat — Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin), notified by Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), comes into force 1 July 2026, repealing MGNREGA, 2005. Guarantees 125 days of wage employment (up from 100). Four work areas: water security, rural infrastructure, livelihood infrastructure, climate resilience. Wages via DBT (15-day disbursement). Aligns with Viksit Bharat@2047.

Bharat Maritime Insurance Pool (BMIP)
Launched by Department of Financial Services (DFS), MoF in May 2026. Pool size: USD 1.5 billion; sovereign guarantee: USD 1.4 Bn (Rs 12,980 crore). Provides risk cover to Indian vessels on international routes, including war and high-risk zones. Reduces dependence on foreign IG P&I Clubs, which can withdraw cover under sanctions. Strengthens sovereign control over India’s maritime trade.

Indian Ocean Dialogue (IOD-10), New Delhi
India hosted the 10th IOD from 7-8 May 2026 in New Delhi under the theme ‘Indian Ocean Region in a Transforming World’. Organised by MEA with Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) and IORA Secretariat. India holds IORA chairship 2025-27. Inaugural addresses: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal (MoPS&W), Dhananjay Ramful (Mauritius), Waleed Al Qadimi (Yemen). Women’s participation in India’s maritime sector up 340% since 2020.

India’s First Integrated CCUS Field Lab — IIT Bombay
Inaugurated by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan (MoE) at IIT Bombay, Mumbai under ‘Bharat Innovates 2026’. India’s first end-to-end pilot-scale platform integrating Carbon Capture & Utilisation (CCU) with Geological CO2 Sequestration (GCS) in basalt formations (Deccan Traps). Technology scaled up by UrjanovaC, a deep-tech start-up incubated at SINE, IIT-B. CO2 converted into carbonate/bicarbonate salts for steel, cement, petrochem, and pharma.
International
India-IFAD COSOP 2026-2033
Launched on 13 May 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. 8-year Country Strategic Opportunities Programme (COSOP) by GoI and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) — a UN specialised agency. Focus: rural prosperity, inclusive and climate-resilient development. Two priorities: (1) social, economic, and climate resilience of rural communities; (2) strengthening knowledge systems for Global South. NABARD signed a strategic partnership with IFAD.

Faustino Oro — Second-Youngest GM Ever
Faustino Oro of Argentina, the ‘Messi of Chess’, became the second-youngest Grandmaster in history at age 12 years, 6 months, 26 days. Final GM norm earned at the Sardinia World Chess Festival 2026 (Italy, 3-10 May 2026) by drawing against GM Ian Nepomniachtchi. The youngest-ever GM record is held by Abhimanyu Mishra (USA) — set in 2021 at 12 years, 4 months. Oro is the 7th player to earn GM title before age 13.

Himanta Biswa Sarma — CM Assam (2nd Term)
Sworn in for second consecutive term on 12 May 2026 at Veterinary College Ground, Khanapara, Guwahati. First non-Congress leader to serve two successive terms as Assam CM. Oath administered by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya as per Third Schedule of the Constitution. CM appointment governed by Article 164. BJP-led NDA won 102 of 126 seats; BJP alone won 82 — its first outright majority in Assam. Sarma is also President, BAI (since 2017).

IMD’s First AI-Enabled Weather Forecasts
Launched in May 2026 by Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh (MoST) at Mahika Hall, MoES, New Delhi. Two products: (1) Forecast of Monsoon Advance — weekly forecasts up to 4 weeks ahead, supporting farmers across 16 States and 3,000+ sub-districts; (2) High Spatial Resolution Rainfall Forecast for UP at 1-km resolution up to 10 days. Developed by IMD with IITM Pune and NCMRWF.

RBI Cancels Sarvodaya Co-op Bank Licence; DICGC Cover
RBI cancelled the licence of Sarvodaya Co-operative Bank Limited, Mumbai, w.e.f. 12 May 2026 under Sections 22(4) and 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949. Reasons: inadequate capital, weak earnings, inability to repay depositors, non-compliance with capital adequacy. Maharashtra Registrar of Co-operative Societies (RCS) to oversee winding-up. DICGC (wholly-owned RBI subsidiary) provides cover up to Rs 5 lakh per depositor per bank on savings, current, fixed, and recurring deposits.
