Think & Discuss
Bridging the Gender Digital Divide: Can Technology Be Truly Inclusive?
Context from today’s quiz: This year’s World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (May 17, 2025) carries the theme “Gender Equality in Digital Transformation” β€” marking the 160th anniversary of ITU. Meanwhile, India is advancing semiconductor design (3nm chips) and seeing fintech growth through Payment Aggregators like PayU and BillDesk. Yet, gender gaps in digital access remain a pressing global challenge.
πŸ€” Your Perspective Matters
As India races to become a global semiconductor and fintech hub, the benefits of digital transformation are not equally distributed β€” women in rural areas, low-income groups, and marginalised communities often remain on the periphery of the digital economy.

Should “gender equality” be a standalone digital policy goal, or should it be embedded as a prerequisite within every digital infrastructure project?
  • India’s C2S and DLI semiconductor schemes focus on engineering talent β€” how can these programmes be redesigned to close the gender gap in STEM and chip design?
  • Digital financial inclusion (via Payment Aggregators) has transformed payments for merchants β€” but has it equally empowered women entrepreneurs? What structural barriers remain?
  • With WTISD turning 160 years old, has the original vision of universal communication access evolved to meaningfully include gender equity, or is it still a secondary concern for most governments?
