Think & Discuss
India’s Trade Deficit: Gold Fever or Structural Weakness?
Context from today’s quiz: India’s trade deficit doubled to USD 27.1 billion in February 2026, driven largely by a 24% surge in imports β€” primarily gold and silver. Meanwhile, exports declined marginally. This pattern raises a fundamental question about India’s economic priorities and structural trade vulnerabilities.
πŸ€” Your Perspective Matters
India has a long cultural and financial tradition of gold ownership, making precious metal imports a recurring driver of trade imbalances. Yet, a widening deficit also reflects gaps in domestic manufacturing, export competitiveness, and consumption patterns.

Should India treat its gold import demand as a cultural reality to manage, or as an economic vulnerability to correct β€” and what policy tools actually work?
  • Schemes like the Gold Monetisation Scheme aim to channel idle gold into productive use β€” why have such schemes struggled to gain traction with Indian households?
  • Does a widening trade deficit necessarily signal economic trouble, or can it be consistent with strong domestic consumption and growth?
  • What structural reforms in export policy, manufacturing, or currency management could help India reduce its trade vulnerability over the long term?
