India at the Global Stage: From Trade Agreements to Olympic Cricket — Is India’s Soft Power Strategy Paying Off?
Context from today’s quiz: In the space of a single week in June 2026, India signed or activated a historic trade agreement with the UK (CETA), participated in the world’s largest naval exercise (RIMPAC), secured the Indian women’s cricket team’s Olympic qualification, and launched a cross-border payments platform reaching 90+ countries. Simultaneously, the Government committed Rs 60,000 Crore to infrastructure via NIIF and launched welfare tech platforms (PM-FCT) to reach children from pregnancy to age 18. This cluster of events — diplomatic, economic, technological, and sporting — reflects India’s increasingly multi-dimensional projection on the global stage.
🤔 Your Perspective Matters
India’s engagements in June 2026 span trade (UK-CETA), defence (RIMPAC), fintech (PayGlocal/Google Pay), sport (cricket Olympics), and welfare technology (PM-FCT). Each represents a distinct dimension of national capability-building and international presence.

Is India’s multi-front global engagement a coherent grand strategy — or is it a collection of independent policy wins that risk spreading diplomatic and financial bandwidth too thin?
  • The India-UK CETA comes into force on 15 July 2026. Given India’s simultaneous trade tensions with other partners, does CETA represent a strategic pivot toward Western economic alliances — and what are the risks of appearing to align too closely with one bloc?
  • The PM-FCT tracks children’s health, nutrition, and education from pregnancy via a unique digital ID linked to ABHA. What are the opportunities of such integrated welfare monitoring — and what data privacy safeguards should be mandated to prevent misuse of this sensitive life-course data?
  • Cricket’s return to the Olympics after 128 years (LA 2028) gives India a massive soft power opportunity. Given the ICC’s T20 format with only six teams per event, should the BCCI prioritise Olympic cricket over the IPL calendar — and what structural changes in Indian cricket governance would this require?
