Think & Discuss
India as the Global South’s AI Leader: Opportunity or Overreach?
Context from today’s quiz: The India AI Impact Summit 2026 positioned India as the host of the first major global AI event in the Global South. Simultaneously, India launched VoicERA on BHASHINI, opened an IIT Madras AI centre in Dubai, and showcased convergence of AI with biotechnology at BioAsia 2026—all in a single week.
🤔 Your Perspective Matters
India is rapidly positioning itself as the technological voice of the Global South—hosting global AI summits, building open-source multilingual AI tools, and exporting AI expertise abroad. But does this ambition match ground realities like digital infrastructure gaps, AI talent shortages, and data privacy concerns?

Can India genuinely lead the Global South’s AI transformation, or is the narrative ahead of the actual capabilities?
  • Should India prioritise solving domestic digital divide issues before projecting global AI leadership? Or can both happen simultaneously?
  • Tools like VoicERA aim to democratise AI for India’s 22 scheduled languages. What are the risks of deploying AI at scale without adequate data governance frameworks?
  • With IIT Madras establishing AI centres in Dubai, is India building a brain-drain pipeline or genuinely exporting technology for mutual benefit?

We’d love to hear your thoughts! Share your perspective in the comments.
