Observed 17 May annually by the ITU (International Telecommunication Union), Geneva, Switzerland. 2026 theme: ‘Digital Lifelines: Strengthening Resilience in a Connected World.’ Marks founding of ITU on 17 May 1865 (First International Telegraph Convention, Paris). Merged from World Telecommunication Day & World Information Society Day at ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2006, Antalya. Promotes ICTs as enablers of SDG 9 and SDG 16.

Mission Coffee of Nagaland — MDoNER Initiative
Launched virtually by Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER). Total outlay: Rs 175 crore. Two pilot clusters: Tuophema village (Kohima) — Arabica; Ghotovi village (Niuland) — Robusta. Pilot project: Rs 49.48 crore for end-to-end coffee value chain. Focus: plantation, processing, branding, export, and coffee tourism.

AMCA Programme — India’s 5th-Gen Fighter
Foundation laid by Rajnath Singh at Puttaparthi, Sri Sathya Sai district, Andhra Pradesh. AMCA = Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft; indigenous 5th-generation, twin-engine stealth multirole fighter for IAF and Indian Navy. Developed by ADA (Aeronautical Development Agency) under DRDO. Total project: ~Rs 15,000 crore; Core Integration & Flight Testing Centre: Rs 2,000 crore. Also: Naval Systems Facility (BDL, Rs 480 crore); Defence Energetics Facility (Agneyastra/Bharat Forge, Rs 1,500 crore).

Kerala CM — V. D. Satheesan (13th Chief Minister)
V. D. Satheesan (Vadasseri Damodara Menon Satheesan) sworn in as 13th Chief Minister of Kerala following UDF (United Democratic Front) victory in 2026 Kerala Assembly Elections. Oath by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Central Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram. Represents Paravur constituency (since 2001); INC member; former Leader of Opposition (2021–26). Succeeded Pinarayi Vijayan (LDF; CM May 2016–May 2026, two consecutive terms).

US FMS Packages for India — USD 428 Million
US State Department approved two Foreign Military Sales (FMS) sustainment packages worth USD 428.2 million. Package 1 (USD 198.2 million): AH-64E Apache attack helicopter support — contractors: Boeing & Lockheed Martin. Package 2 (USD 230 million): M777A2 ultra-light howitzer long-term sustainment — contractor: BAE Systems. Both part of India-US Major Defence Partnership. AH-64E is the latest Apache variant; M777A2 is a 155mm lightweight artillery system.

UIDAI — New CEO Saurabh Vijay
UIDAI = Unique Identification Authority of India; functions under Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Established under the Aadhaar Act, 2016; HQ: New Delhi. Manages Aadhaar — 12-digit biometric identity for 1.4 billion+ residents. New CEO: Saurabh Vijay (May 2026), succeeding Vivek Chandra Verma (who had additional charge post-elevation of Bhuvnesh Kumar as DoT Secretary).

RBI Discontinues Investment Fluctuation Reserve (IFR)
RBI discontinued the Investment Fluctuation Reserve (IFR) effective 18 May 2026. IFR was a buffer created by banks to absorb mark-to-market (MTM) valuation losses on investment portfolios, especially government securities. Discontinued because existing capital and risk management norms already provide adequate protection. RBI established: 1 April 1935; HQ: Mumbai; current Governor: Sanjay Malhotra.

Google–Blackstone AI Cloud JV — USD 5 Billion
Google LLC and Blackstone Inc. (world’s largest alternative asset manager) launched a JV with an initial USD 5 billion equity commitment from Blackstone. CEO: Benjamin Treynor Sloss. Provides Google TPUs (Tensor Processing Units) as compute-as-a-service. Target: 500 MW capacity online by 2027. TPUs power Gemini AI and cloud-based AI services. Competes with Nvidia-backed CoreWeave. Blackstone also invested in OpenAI and Anthropic.

DICGC Deposit Insurance — Rs 5 Lakh Coverage
RBI imposed restrictions on Nagar Sahakari Bank Limited, Etawah (UP) in May 2026. Withdrawal cap: Rs 10,000 per customer for six months; bank cannot grant loans/accept fresh deposits without RBI approval. Eligible depositors protected by DICGC (Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation) — maximum coverage: Rs 5 lakh. DICGC: wholly owned RBI subsidiary, established 1961 under the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation Act, 1961.
