Think & Discuss
India’s Semiconductor Ambition vs. Global Tech Dependence: Can India Become a Chip Manufacturing Powerhouse by 2030?
Context from today’s quiz: India inaugurated its first advanced 3D Glass Chip Packaging Unit in Bhubaneswar in April 2026 — backed by Rs 1,943 crore under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). While this is a significant milestone, the unit is being developed by a US firm (3D Glass Solutions Inc.) through an Indian subsidiary. Full commercial production is projected only by 2030. Meanwhile, global chip supply chains remain fragile, as seen in the West Asia crisis impact on India’s energy and digital infrastructure. India’s semiconductor ambition is real — but the gap between aspiration and self-reliance remains large.
🤔 Your Perspective Matters
India’s semiconductor push under the ISM is promising, but it relies heavily on foreign technology partners (US, Japan, Taiwan). The 3DGS unit in Bhubaneswar will produce advanced chips for AI, 5G, and defence — sectors critical to national security and economic competitiveness. Yet, India still lacks a fully indigenous fab facility.

Should India prioritise building fully indigenous chip fabrication capacity — even at higher cost and longer timelines — or is the current ‘attract foreign fabs and develop local packaging’ strategy sufficient to achieve strategic autonomy in semiconductors?
  • The DA hike (58%→60%) signals rising government spending on employee welfare. At the same time, India is investing heavily in semiconductors, defence, and space. How should India balance social spending with high-technology capital investment — especially as UN-ESCAP projects GDP growth at 6.4% for CY26?
  • India’s first Petroglyph Conservation Park in Ladakh is being set up as rapid infrastructure development threatens ancient rock art. Does India’s semiconductor and infrastructure push risk creating a trade-off between development and cultural heritage — and how should this tension be managed?
  • Aronyak Ghosh became India’s 95th Chess Grandmaster at age 22, representing Railways Sports Promotion Board. India now has 95 GMs — and aims to produce a World Champion. Does public-sector sports promotion (through bodies like RSPB, Railways, Army) still serve its purpose in the age of private academies and global tournaments?
