Observed 23 April annually; established by UNESCO in 1995. Marks death anniversaries of Shakespeare, Cervantes, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. For 2026, Rabat (Morocco) is designated the 26th World Book Capital. First official celebration: 23 April 1996, Barcelona. Aim: expand access to books and promote literacy worldwide.

PM Internship Scheme (PMIS) — Revised Eligibility 2026
Revised by Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) in April 2026. New eligibility: 18–25 years (from 21–24). Covers final-year UG and PG students with NOC from HoD/Dean. Monthly stipend: Rs 9,000 (90% GoI-funded) + Rs 6,000 additional assistance in two instalments. Duration: one year.

India–South Korea Relations — State Visit April 2026
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung visited India 19–21 April 2026 — first South Korean Presidential visit in eight years. Bilateral trade target reaffirmed: USD 50 billion by 2030 (current: ~USD 26.89 billion, FY25). Announced Joint Strategic Vision 2026–2030, new Industrial Cooperation Committee (ICC), and India-Korea Digital Bridge. Ties elevated to Special Strategic Partnership (SSP) in 2015.

Appointed Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court w.e.f. 25 April 2026; first woman CJ since AP HC’s separate formation in 2019. Notified under Article 217(1) of the Constitution. 4th edition of IN-SLN DIVEX held 21–27 April 2026 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Focus: Diving Support and Submarine Rescue. India’s vessel: INS Nireekshak. Aims to improve interoperability and exchange best practices. Aligns with India’s Neighbourhood First policy and MAHASAGAR vision (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions).

Pakistan’s Taimoor ALCM — Anti-Ship Test April 2026
First publicly disclosed anti-ship firing on 21 April 2026. Taimoor is a low-observable Air-Launched Cruise Missile (ALCM) developed by Air Weapons Complex (AWC) under GIDS. Strike range: up to 600 km. Features: sea-skimming terminal path; targets stationary and moving ships. Earlier land-target test by PAF: 3 January 2026.

Shekha Jheel — India’s 99th Ramsar Site
Shekha Jheel Bird Sanctuary, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh — designated India’s 99th Ramsar Site in April 2026. Hosts 249 bird species; vital stopover on Central Asian Flyway. UP now has 12 Ramsar sites; Tamil Nadu leads with 20. Ramsar Convention signed 1971, Ramsar, Iran; India signatory: 1 February 1982. Announced by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav.

Pay Point India — First Fintech in RBI’s CPS
Pay Point India Network: first private-sector fintech with direct CPS (Centralised Payment System) membership of RBI. Now has direct access to RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement) and NEFT without a sponsor bank. Assigned own IFSC code; can hold settlement account directly with RBI. Earlier, CPS was limited to banks, NPCI, and CCIL.

PNB Kiwi Credit Card — RuPay on UPI
Punjab National Bank (PNB) + fintech Kiwi launched PNB Kiwi Credit Card — co-branded RuPay credit card on UPI. Enables credit-based payments via UPI QR codes. Benefits: zero joining/annual fees; cashback 0.5%–1.5% on online transactions; fully digital onboarding. Targets PNB’s 180 million customers; promotes credit access in semi-urban and rural India.

TDIP Scheme — Revised Guidelines 2026–31
Technology Development and Investment Promotion (TDIP) Scheme revised by Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia (DoT/MoDoNER) in April 2026. Outlay: Rs 203 crore for 2026–31. Focus: India’s participation in global telecom standards, 5G Advanced and 6G innovation. Implementing agencies: TSDSI, TCoE, TCIL. Supports India’s work in ITU and 3GPP bodies.
