India’s War on Poverty: Numbers Tell a Story β€” But Do They Tell the Whole Truth?
Context from today’s quiz: The World Bank’s April 2025 brief reports a dramatic fall in India’s extreme poverty β€” from 16.2% (2011–12) to 2.3% (2022–23), lifting 17.1 crore people. This coincides with India ranking 9th globally in PCT filings (22.2% growth) and launching first-ever indigenous HPV test kits β€” signalling both a poverty-reduction success story and a rising innovation economy. But real-world ground conditions often complicate headline statistics.
πŸ€” Your Perspective Matters
India’s poverty reduction numbers are globally celebrated, yet critics point to the USD 2.15/day threshold as too low a bar, and rising rural-urban inequality persists in other dimensions (healthcare access, digital divide, nutritional outcomes). At the same time, schemes like UDAN, PM-MITRA, and indigenous HPV kits represent inclusive development β€” connecting cities, creating jobs, and addressing public health gaps.

Is India’s development model genuinely inclusive, or are we at risk of celebrating aggregate progress while millions remain behind in quality-of-life indicators beyond income?
  • Should poverty measurement in India shift beyond income thresholds to a multidimensional poverty index covering health, education, and digital access β€” and how would that change policy priorities?
  • How can initiatives like PM-MITRA and UDAN be better designed to ensure that economic growth in Tier-2/3 cities and rural India translates into quality employment rather than just connectivity?
  • With India accounting for 25% of global cervical cancer deaths yet launching its first indigenous HPV kits only in 2025, what does this reveal about the pace of public health innovation relative to the scale of the crisis?
