Think & Discuss
India’s Semiconductor Ambition: Strategic Leap or Long Road Ahead?
Context from today’s quiz: PM Modi inaugurated the Kaynes Semicon Plant at Sanand GIDC, Ahmedabad on 31 March 2026 — marking the commencement of commercial semiconductor production in India under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). This is a historic milestone for a country that currently imports the vast majority of its chips, in a global landscape reshaped by US–China tech tensions and supply chain vulnerabilities exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
🤔 Your Perspective Matters
India has long been a software powerhouse but has lagged in hardware and chip manufacturing. The launch of the Kaynes Semicon Plant signals a potential turning point — but semiconductor fabs require decades of ecosystem building, massive capital, and specialised talent pipelines.

Can India realistically become a significant player in global semiconductor manufacturing within the next decade, and what structural reforms are essential for that goal?
  • How does India’s semiconductor mission compare to similar state-led initiatives in Taiwan (TSMC era), South Korea, or China — and what lessons can India draw from those experiences?
  • Given India’s existing strengths in chip design and software, should the focus be on fabless chip design and advanced packaging rather than full-scale fabrication? What are the trade-offs?
  • What role should private capital, foreign investment (e.g., from US, Japan, Taiwan), and India’s engineering talent diaspora play in building a sustainable semiconductor ecosystem under ISM?
