Annual award: UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize. Norway topped RSF Index for 10th consecutive year; Eritrea at bottom.

GalaxEye Mission Drishti — World’s First OptoSAR Satellite
Launched 3 May 2026 aboard SpaceX Falcon 9 from Vandenberg SFB, California. Developed by GalaxEye (IIT Madras alumni, founded 2021, Bengaluru). OptoSAR = Optical + Synthetic Aperture Radar — all-weather, day-and-night Earth observation. Weight: 190 kg — India’s largest privately built satellite. Partner: NSIL (ISRO’s commercial arm) for global data distribution. Constellation target: 10 satellites by 2030. PM Modi hailed it as a ‘major achievement.’

India in RSF World Press Freedom Index 2026
India ranked 157th out of 180 — a 6-place drop from 151st in 2025. Released by RSF (Reporters Sans Frontières) on 30 April 2026. RSF noted India’s media in an ‘unofficial state of emergency.’ Neighbour rankings: Nepal (87th), Sri Lanka (134th), Bhutan (150th), Bangladesh (152nd), Pakistan (153rd), China (178th). Global press freedom score at 25-year low; 52%+ countries in ‘difficult’ or ‘very serious’ categories.

PMGSY-IV Launch — Rural Road Connectivity
Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) launched in 2000; 4th phase launched by Shivraj Singh Chouhan (MoRD) in Rayagada, Odisha. Funding ratio: 60% Centre, 40% State. Odisha outlay: Rs 1,700 crore; 827 road projects; 1,701.84 km roads connecting 898 habitations. Districts: Kandhamal, Keonjhar, Khordha, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Sambalpur. CM: Mohan Charan Majhi.

Sikkim — India’s First Paperless Judiciary State
Announced by CJI Justice Surya Kant at the ‘Conclave on Technology and Judicial Education,’ Chintan Bhawan, Gangtok, Sikkim. Coincided with Sikkim’s 50th year of statehood (joined India 1975). E-Courts features: e-filing, Digital Case Management (DCM), virtual hearings (VC), e-Seva Kendras (eSK). Electronic summons via SMS/email through NSTEP (National Service and Tracking of Electronic Processes). Improves access to justice in remote hilly areas.

C-ART Coastal Atmospheric Research Testbed — Visakhapatnam
Inaugurated at Andhra University, Visakhapatnam on 1 May 2026 by Dr M. Ravichandran (Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences). Developed by IITM (Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology), Pune at Rs 180 crore under Mission Mausam. First coastal weather research testbed on India’s east coast (Bay of Bengal). Aims to improve numerical weather prediction and cyclone early warning systems. Existing facilities: Bhopal, Mumbai, Mahabaleshwar. Chennai facility planned.

MoSPI ‘Women and Men in India 2025’ — Key Statistics
Released by MoSPI (27th edition) at National Deliberative Summit, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Sex ratio at birth: improved from 904 (2017-19) to 917 (2021-23). Rural female LFPR rose to 45.9% (2022–25) — highest increase. Urban TFR: 1.6 (below replacement); Rural TFR: 2.1. Published annually since 1995. Indicates improving female survival rates and greater women’s workforce participation in rural areas.

LR-AShM Phase-II — DRDO Hypersonic Missile Test
Phase-II trial conducted 1 May 2026 from APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha (ITR). Led by APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex, Hyderabad; partner: Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL). Specs: Range 1,500 km; Weight ~12 tonnes; Length 13 m; max speed Mach 10; avg Mach 5 (hypersonic glide). Previous tests: 2023, Nov 2024. Displayed at Republic Day 2026. India joins USA, Russia, China with operational hypersonic anti-ship capability.

IPPB Zero-Balance SHG Savings Account — NRLM Alignment
Launched by India Post Payments Bank (IPPB), DoP (Ministry of Communications). Aligned with National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), Ministry of Rural Development, supported by NABARD. Features: zero balance, zero charges, free deposits/withdrawals, quarterly interest (2% up to Rs 1 lakh; 2.25% for Rs 1–2 lakh). Delivery via 1.65 lakh post offices, ~3 lakh postal workers, serving 5.5 lakh+ villages through Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS). Targets women-led SHGs.

India defeated Chinese Taipei 3-0 in QF to reach semi-finals; assured minimum bronze medal. India’s first Thomas Cup win: 2022, defeating Indonesia 3-0 in final at Bangkok, Thailand — ending a 73-year wait.
