India’s Defence Indigenisation: Is Excluding HAL from AMCA a Strategic Masterstroke or a Risky Gamble?
Context from today’s quiz: For the first time in India’s defence aviation history, the MoD excluded Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) from the AMCA RFP and opened the programme to private sector players — Tata Advanced Systems Limited, L&T-BEL-Dynamatic Technologies, and Bharat Forge-BEML-Data Patterns. This marks a decisive pivot in India’s defence procurement philosophy. Simultaneously, India signed a Critical Minerals Framework with the USA at the 11th Quad Foreign Ministers Meeting, signalling a broader effort to secure the raw materials needed for 21st-century strategic technologies — from fighter jets to semiconductors.
🤔 Your Perspective Matters
India’s AMCA programme represents the most ambitious indigenous defence project since Tejas — a fifth-generation stealth fighter that could define India’s air superiority doctrine for decades. The decision to bypass HAL in favour of private competition signals a fundamental rethink of India’s defence-industrial complex.

Should India rely on private sector competition for its most critical defence programmes like AMCA, or does excluding a proven (if slow) institution like HAL introduce unacceptable execution risk for a strategic national capability?
  • Taiwan’s rise to the 5th largest stock market was driven by TSMC’s dominance in AI-led semiconductor manufacturing. India is now pursuing critical minerals supply chains through the Quad framework. Does India have a coherent national strategy to build its own deep-tech manufacturing base — or is it primarily securing inputs for others’ supply chains?
  • India’s foodgrain production hit a record 376.563 MT in 2025-26, yet the SARTHAK-PDS scheme requires Rs 25,530 crore to simply transport and distribute that food. What does this say about India’s agricultural logistics infrastructure — and is the focus on production records obscuring deeper supply-chain inefficiencies?
  • India’s VISTA balloon launch and the 2028 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships hosting rights both reflect a pattern of India claiming ‘firsts’ in emerging domains. Is this symbolic achievement-gathering building genuine strategic capability — or is it a distraction from deeper institutional reforms needed across science, defence, and sports infrastructure?
