Think & Discuss
India’s GI Tags, Biodiversity Sites & Rural Schemes: Are We Protecting Heritage and Livelihoods Fast Enough?
Context from today’s quiz: Today’s quiz surfaces a striking breadth of policy activity: West Bengal added 23 GI tags in a single month to reach 59, protecting products like Jolbhora Sandesh and Murshidabad silk; Assam notified Borjuli as a Biodiversity Heritage Site to protect wild rice (Oryza rufipogon); and the VB-GRAM G scheme was launched with a Rs 7.5 lakh crore outlay to generate rural employment and livelihoods. These three developments — GI protection, biodiversity conservation, and rural livelihood schemes — are deeply interconnected: GI tags preserve artisan knowledge and local economies; BHS notifications protect the ecological base for traditional agriculture; and rural schemes fund the people who maintain both.
🤔 Your Perspective Matters
India has over 600 registered GI tags, yet awareness among consumers — especially urban ones — remains limited. Biodiversity Heritage Sites protect ecological knowledge but lack the enforcement teeth of National Parks. And large rural schemes often struggle with last-mile delivery.

Should India create an integrated ‘Heritage Economy’ policy that links GI protection, biodiversity conservation, and rural livelihood schemes — and how should the Centre, States, and local communities share responsibility for this?
  • West Bengal now has 59 GI tags but still trails UP (83) and Tamil Nadu (76). Is the number of GI tags a meaningful metric of heritage protection, or does it matter more how well-marketed and economically viable those tags are for artisans and farmers?
  • The Borjuli BHS protects wild rice — a genetic resource with global agricultural significance. Given that India is a megadiverse country, should BHS notifications be fast-tracked under a dedicated national programme rather than being state-by-state processes under the Biological Diversity Act?
  • PMKSY completed 10 years with Rs 50,000 crore original outlay now scaled to Rs 93,068 crore, while VB-GRAM G adds Rs 7.5 lakh crore. With such large outlays, how should India measure the real-world impact on farmer incomes and water security — and what accountability mechanisms are missing?
