Originates from Windhoek Declaration (1991) by African journalists, Namibia. 2026 theme: ‘Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security.’ Global Conference: Lusaka, Zambia (4–5 May 2026), co-hosted by UNESCO & Government of Zambia. Annual award: UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize. India: 157th (down from 151st); Norway: 1st for 10th consecutive year.

GalaxEye Mission Drishti — World’s First OptoSAR Satellite
Launched 3 May 2026; SpaceX Falcon 9, Vandenberg SFB, California. Startup: GalaxEye (IIT Madras alumni, est. 2021, Bengaluru). OptoSAR = Electro-Optical + Synthetic Aperture Radar — single platform, all-weather, day-and-night imaging. Weight: 190 kg — India’s largest privately built satellite. Partner: NSIL (NewSpace India Limited) for global data distribution. Target: 10-satellite constellation by 2030. Both ISRO and PM Modi congratulated the team.

Rohit Jain — New RBI Deputy Governor
Appointed by Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) as RBI Deputy Governor effective 3 May 2026 for a 3-year term. Succeeds T. Rabi Sankar (served 2021–April 2026; known for CBDC/digital rupee and fintech regulation). Jain: former Executive Director, RBI; holds M.Com and MBA; ~30 years central banking experience. Current RBI Governor: Sanjay Malhotra (since December 2024). RBI established: 1 April 1935; HQ: Mumbai.

100th Vande Bharat Trainset & Jammu–Srinagar Link
100th Vande Bharat rolled out on 2 May 2026 from Modern Coach Factory (MCF), Raebareli, UP — 3rd manufacturer after ICF Chennai and RCF Kapurthala. Propulsion: Siemens; equipped with Kavach ATP system, fire detection, sealed gangways, automatic plug doors. Programme began: 2018. Same day: Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express commenced — first direct train link between Jammu and Srinagar.

Sikkim — India’s First Paperless Judiciary State
Announced by CJI Justice Surya Kant at ‘Conclave on Technology and Judicial Education,’ Chintan Bhawan, Gangtok. Marks Sikkim’s 50th year of statehood (joined India 1975). Features: e-filing, Digital Case Management (DCM), virtual hearings, e-Seva Kendras (eSK), electronic summons via NSTEP (National Service and Tracking of Electronic Processes). Enhances access to justice in remote/hilly areas. Sikkim is a model for other states to emulate.

Ishank Singh — Youngest Palk Strait Swimmer
7-year-old Ishank Singh, Class 3, DAV Shyamali School, Ranchi, Jharkhand (MS Dhoni’s school). Swam 29 km from Talaimannar (Sri Lanka) to Dhanushkodi (Tamil Nadu) in 9 hours 50 minutes on 30 April 2026. Became Youngest & Fastest Palk Strait Swimmer; recognised by Universal Records Forum (URF). Previous record: 10 hr 30 min by a 10-year-old (2019). Escorted by Sri Lankan Navy (~15 km) and Indian Coast Guard. Coaches: Aman Kumar Jaiswal and Bajrang Kumar. Palk Strait: connects Bay of Bengal with Gulf of Mannar.

LR-AShM Phase-II — DRDO Hypersonic Missile Test
Phase-II trial on ~1 May 2026, APJ Abdul Kalam Island (ITR), Odisha. Long-Range Anti-Ship Hypersonic Missile: range 1,500 km; weight ~12 tonnes; length 13 m; diameter 1.4 m. Speed: Mach 10 (boost); avg Mach 5 (glide). Developed by APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex, Hyderabad; partner: BDL. Previous tests: 2023, Nov 2024. Displayed at Republic Day 2026. India joins USA, Russia, China with operational hypersonic anti-ship capability.

Two divisions: All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan (DD). Also operates Waves OTT platform. Joshi: former CBFC Chairman (since August 2017), ex-CEO of McCann World Group India; noted lyricist and communications expert.

RSF cited rising violence against journalists, concentrated media ownership, political pressure — termed it an ‘unofficial state of emergency.’ South Asian context: Nepal (87th), Sri Lanka (134th), Bhutan (150th), Bangladesh (152nd), Pakistan (153rd), China (178th), Eritrea (180th — last). Global average score at 25-year low; 52%+ countries rated ‘difficult’ or ‘very serious.’
