India’s Global Ambitions: From Ayurveda to AI — Is India’s Soft Power Strategy Coherent Enough to Deliver Influence by 2047?
Context from today’s quiz: In a single day’s news cycle, India announced a PwC-backed global Ayurveda roadmap, secured three founding members on the ITU’s AI for Good Global Commission (Ambani, Sunil Mittal, Lakshmi Mittal), recorded its highest-ever SDR rank (94th), and saw Japan’s PM inaugurate a Maruti Suzuki plant in Haryana with 129 MoUs signed. Simultaneously, the new COAS unveiled a ‘Jointness and Integration’ roadmap for the Army, ADB approved a landmark Chennai water project, and India’s largest-ever FDI in metallurgy was signed for Odisha. These events — spanning health diplomacy, tech governance, industrial investment, and military modernisation — all orbit the same north star: Viksit Bharat@2047.
🤔 Your Perspective Matters
India is simultaneously projecting soft power through Ayurveda and AI governance, deepening bilateral ties with Japan through industrial co-development, and attracting record FDI in metals. But strategic breadth can sometimes come at the cost of depth — spreading diplomatic and institutional bandwidth thinly across too many initiatives.

Is India’s multi-pronged approach to global influence — spanning traditional knowledge (Ayurveda), digital governance (AI for Good), industrial diplomacy (Japan MoUs), and defence modernisation (VIJAY roadmap) — coherent enough to build lasting strategic weight, or does India risk becoming a country of impressive announcements without sustained execution?
  • India’s SDR 2026 rank improved to 94th, but the country still struggles with 13 of 17 SDGs — including Zero Hunger. Does improving on global indices while domestic SDG performance lags represent a genuine development paradox, and how should India prioritise between global optics and grassroots SDG delivery?
  • The AEL–IRH Odisha aluminium project (USD 11.5 billion) will become India’s largest-ever metallurgy FDI. Given Adani’s scale and Abu Dhabi’s sovereign capital, is this the right model for India’s industrial FDI — and how should India balance attracting large conglomerates vs. building domestic MSMEs in metals and manufacturing?
  • General Dhiraj Seth’s VIJAY roadmap emphasises Jointness and Integration (tri-services synergy). Given that India has had a Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) since 2020, how much progress has India actually made on theaterisation — and what structural barriers remain to achieving true tri-services integration before 2030?
