As per a joint NASA and NOAA assessment (24 Nov 2025), the 2025 Antarctic ozone hole averaged 7.23 million sq miles, peaking at 8.83 million sq miles on 9 September.
- This makes it the fifth smallest ozone hole since 1992, indicating steady atmospheric recovery.
- Scientists credit this improvement to the Montreal Protocol (1987), which successfully phased out ozone-depleting chemicals like CFCs.
- Antarctic stratospheric chlorine levels have dropped by nearly 33% since 2000.
- The ozone hole is now forming later in the year and closing earlier.
- Complete recovery expected by the late 2060s.
