Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated an international exhibition of the sacred Piprahwa relics of Gautama Buddha on 3 January 2026 at the Rai Pithora Cultural Complex, New Delhi. The exhibition is titled “The Light & the Lotus: Relics of the Awakened One.”
Historical Significance:
- The Piprahwa relics, discovered in 1898, are considered among the earliest physical relics directly associated with Gautama Buddha
- Archaeological evidence links Piprahwa to ancient Kapilavastu, traditionally believed to be the place where Buddha spent his early life before renunciation

The repatriation of the relics was made possible through coordinated efforts involving government initiatives, institutional cooperation, and public-private partnerships, highlighting India’s deep historical and cultural association with Buddhism.
Assam became the first Indian state to constitute its 8th State Pay Commission for government employees, formed ahead of the expiry of the 7th Pay Commission on 1 January 2026.
