The University Grants Commission (UGC), under the Ministry of Education, formally issued a Letter of Approval (LoA) to the University of Liverpool (UK) to establish its branch campus in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The LoA was presented on 5 June 2026 in the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, EAM S. Jaishankar, and UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper — marking a significant step under the India–UK Vision 2035 framework.

• UG Courses (initial): Business Management, Accounting & Finance, Computer Science, Biomedical Sciences, Game Design.
• PG Courses (initial): MSc Computer Science, MSc Accounting & Finance.
• Russell Group: Association of 24 leading UK research-intensive universities; University of Liverpool is a member.

• UGC Regulations 2023: Enables foreign universities to set up branch campuses in India; aligned with NEP 2020 internationalisation goals.

The Digital India BHASHINI Division, under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), launched the VYOMA Innovation Challenge to promote the development of open-source, multilingual, and voice-first AI solutions that can function in offline and low-connectivity environments. The challenge is built around the Sunno Sutra device and invites startups, researchers, students, and MSMEs to innovate.

• Focus: Language accessibility, digital inclusion, offline AI capability in multilingual contexts.

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh (MoS&T, MoES) inaugurated India's new Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) at Jammu on 5 June 2026 — the 7th RMC established by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Another RMC will soon be established in Lucknow.

• Significance of Jammu RMC: Improves weather forecasting for Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh — strategically critical Himalayan regions; enhances disaster preparedness.
• IMD: India's national meteorological service; responsible for weather forecasting, seismology, and climate monitoring; est. 1875.

Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman was elected as the President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in June 2026, defeating Cyprus's Andreas Kakouris in a closely contested election. He will assume office on 8 September 2026.

• Regional significance: UNGA Presidency rotates among regional groups; a historic win for Bangladesh in the South/Southeast Asia group.
• UNGA role: Deliberative and representative body of the UN; each member state has one vote; discusses all matters within the scope of the UN Charter.

In June 2026, five countries were elected as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for 2026–2028 terms by the UN General Assembly.

• UNSC structure: 5 P5 members with veto power + 10 non-permanent members elected for 2-year terms on a rotating regional basis.
• Election process: Non-permanent members elected by a 2/3 UNGA majority; 5 seats elected annually (half rotate each year).
• UNSC binding authority: Only UN body whose resolutions are legally binding on all member states; powers under Chapter VII of the UN Charter.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 trophy began a three-day tour of India in June 2026, generating excitement ahead of the tournament to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico — the 23rd FIFA World Cup.

• India connection: India did not qualify; trophy tour is a global promotional event by FIFA.
• Historic format change: First World Cup with 48 teams (expanded from 32); 104 matches across 16 venues.

The Government of India (GoI), through the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), appointed Neelkanth Mishra as India's next Executive Director (ED) at the World Bank in Washington D.C., for a three-year term.

On 5 June 2026, Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit was appointed as the next Vice Chief of the Air Staff (VCAS) of the Indian Air Force (IAF) and will assume office on 1 July 2026. He is currently serving as Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (CISC).

The BCCI announced on 6 June 2026 that Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as India's new T20 International (T20I) captain, replacing World Cup-winning skipper Suryakumar Yadav. Teen sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (15 years, 71 days) — youngest player ever selected in India's senior cricket squad — was included for the tours of Ireland and England.
