RBI Repatriates Over 64 Tonnes of India’s Gold Reserves from Overseas (March–September 2025)

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has undertaken a large-scale repatriation of India’s gold reserves previously stored in foreign vaults, successfully bringing back over 64 tonnes between March and September 2025.
  • Since March 2023, the central bank has returned a cumulative total of 274 tonnes of gold to the country—making it one of the largest relocations of gold since the 1990s.
  • As of September 2025, India’s total official gold holdings stand at 880 metric tonnes, which includes:
    • 8 tonnes stored within India,
    • 37 tonnes held abroad, and
    • 99 tonnes maintained as gold deposits.
  • This move strengthens national sovereignty by reducing dependency on foreign custodians and enhancing domestic control over gold assets.
  • Improved domestic storage infrastructure has enabled safe, large-scale storage, reducing the need to maintain major reserves overseas.
  • The repatriation also helps the RBI cut custodial and insurance expenses, leading to more efficient reserve management.
  • Strategically, the transfer enhances the stability of India’s foreign exchange reserves, as gold provides a hedge against inflation and currency volatility.
  • The operation involved tight security, confidential logistics, and close cooperation with foreign financial institutions to ensure zero risk and maintain market confidence.
  • The share of gold in India’s forex reserves rose from 70% in March 2025 to 13.92% in September 2025.
  • Bringing gold back home boosts financial security, supports domestic liquidity, and enhances the RBI’s flexibility in monetary policy management.
