NATIONAL NEWS

  1. ECI Clarifies Role of Identity Cards in Voter Eligibility
  • The Election Commission of India (ECI) has declared that Aadhaar, voter ID, and ration cards alone cannot validate voter eligibility during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar.
  • Drawing from its constitutional authority under Article 324, the ECI reiterated its autonomous control over electoral processes.
  • The key purpose of this initiative is to cleanse and update the electoral rolls.
  • By July 18, more than 7.11 crore voters had submitted applications or forms as part of the process.
  • ECI emphasized that citizenship status, not the mere holding of an ID, is the core criterion for voter registration.
  • Furthermore, refusal to register a person as a voter does not strip them of their Indian citizenship.
  1. Delhi Goes Digital in Lawmaking with NeVA Initiative
  • Speaker Vijender Gupta inaugurated the NeVA Seva Centre at the Delhi Legislative Assembly to support paperless lawmaking.
  • The first phase of the NeVA (National eVidhan Application) project has been implemented.
  • Under this phase, digital tools, smartphones, and training programs have been provided to MLAs.
  • The initiative supports the goals of Digital India, promoting transparency and legislative efficiency through digital transformation.
  1. Indian Institute of Creative Technology Opens Mumbai Campus
  • The Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) launched its first campus at the NFDC Complex in Mumbai.
  • This project is a public–private partnership between the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and the Maharashtra government.
  • The institute will provide industry-relevant education in the AVGC-XR sectors: Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics, and Extended Reality.
  • It aligns with India’s ambition to be a global creative technology hub.
  1. Puducherry Unveils One-Time Legalisation Scheme for Unauthorised Buildings
  • Puducherry launched the One-Time Regularisation Scheme 2025 to legalize unauthorized constructions built between May 1, 1987, and July 16, 2025.
  • Applications are submitted online via OBPS, and applicants must pay fixed fees and scrutiny charges.
  • Government buildings are not covered, while aided schools benefit from 50% fee concessions.
  • Properties that are encroachments or lack clear legal ownership are excluded from the scheme.
  • The move aims to enhance urban planning compliance and offer legal protection to homeowners.

  1. Gita Gopinath to Resign as IMF Deputy Chief
  • Gita Gopinath, the First Deputy Managing Director of the IMF, will step down in August 2025.
  • She is returning to Harvard University as a professor of economics.
  • Gopinath played a critical role during the COVID-19 pandemic and other global economic crises.
  • She significantly contributed to IMF work in fiscal policy, global trade, and debt analysis.

  1. UK Government Plans to Lower Voting Age and Strengthen Donation Laws
  • The Labour government of the UK has proposed reducing the voting age from 18 to 16, a significant reform since the 1969 change from 21 to 18.
  • The change would align the national voting age with voting eligibility for Welsh and Scottish legislatures and local elections.
  • The proposal also includes stricter political donation regulations, such as:
